The Drawer

Chapter 20 by sexycooldude

Alex came back the next evening with a small bag. One change of clothes like she had asked. A t-shirt and sweatpants. Nothing fancy. He felt stupid carrying it up the stairs to her apartment. Like he was assuming too much. But she had suggested it. She had said she wanted his stuff here.

Mia opened the door in soft pants and an old hoodie. Her hair was up in a messy bun. She smiled when she saw the bag.

“You brought it,” she said. She took the bag from him and pulled him inside by the hand. “Come on.”

Her apartment felt even cozier tonight. Lamp on low. Blanket on the couch again. She led him straight to her bedroom and set the bag on the bed. Then she opened the bottom drawer of her dresser. It was mostly empty except for a couple sweaters.

“I cleared this for you,” she said. She looked a little shy about it. “So you don’t have to carry stuff back and forth every time.”

Alex stood there watching her. His chest felt tight in a good way and a scary way at the same time. She was making space for him. Actual space in her drawer. It made the whole thing feel more real than the sex had. More permanent.

He helped her put his shirt and sweatpants in the drawer. Their hands touched a few times while they folded the clothes. She smoothed his t-shirt flat like it mattered. Then she closed the drawer and turned to him.

“There,” she said. “Now it’s easier.”

She took his hand again and led him to the bed. Not to do anything. Just to sit. She climbed on and pulled him down with her. They ended up lying on their sides facing each other. Close but not pressed together. The blanket came up over them without either of them saying anything.

For a while they just looked at each other. Mia reached out and traced his eyebrow with one finger. Slow. Gentle. Like she was memorizing his face.

“You okay?” she asked. Her voice was soft in the quiet room.

Alex swallowed. He had been thinking about this all day at the cafe. Pouring coffee and overthinking every second they had spent together. The way she had said she loved him at the door last night. The drawer. How easy it felt to be here with her and how hard it was to believe it was real.

“I’ve never done this before,” he said. The words came out quiet. “Any of it. The sex. Saying I love you. Having a drawer at someone’s place. I keep waiting for you to change your mind.”

Mia didn’t laugh or look away. She just kept tracing his face. Down his cheek now. Her thumb brushed the corner of his mouth.

“I’m not changing my mind,” she said. “I waited a long time too. I was scared you only saw me as the girl you studied with.”

He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. His hand found her waist under the blanket. Not pulling her closer. Just resting there. Feeling her warmth through the hoodie.

“It feels bigger than I thought it would,” he admitted. “The waiting made everything feel huge. Now that it’s happening I’m scared I’ll mess it up by wanting too much or saying the wrong thing.”

Mia shifted a little closer. Her forehead touched his. Their noses almost brushed. She didn’t kiss him. Just stayed there breathing the same air.

“You’re not messing it up,” she said. “I like that you want me. I like that you overthink it. It means you care.”

Her hand moved to his chest. Right over his heart. She left it there. He could feel her feeling the beat. It made something in him loosen and tighten at the same time. This felt more intimate than anything they had done in bed. Just lying here. Talking. Letting her see the messy parts of his head.

He closed his eyes for a second. When he opened them she was still looking at him. Soft. Patient. Like she had all night.

“I love you,” he said. It came out easier this time. Less like it might break something.

Mia smiled. Small and real. “I love you too.”

She kissed him then. Slow. No heat behind it. Just lips and breath and the quiet of the room. When she pulled back she tucked herself against his chest. Her leg slipped between his but not in a way that pushed for more. Just close. Warm. Safe.

They stayed like that. Talking about nothing important. About the cafe and her classes and how the exam had been easier because they had studied together. Every few minutes she would kiss his collarbone or his jaw. Little touches that said she was here. That she wanted this closeness as much as he did.

Alex let his hand move up and down her back. Slow strokes. He could feel the shape of her through the hoodie. The memory of her naked body from two mornings ago tried to push in but he pushed it back. This was different. This was her letting him see the inside of her too. The quiet parts. The parts that made her suggest a drawer and clear space for his clothes without making it a big deal.

He still worried. What if tomorrow she woke up and decided it was too much? What if the emotional stuff was harder to keep than the physical had been? But right now, with her breathing against his neck and her hand on his heart, he let himself believe it might be okay.

Mia lifted her head and looked at him again. Her eyes were sleepy but warm.

“Stay tonight,” she said. “Just to sleep. If you want.”

He nodded. No hesitation this time. “Yeah. I want to.”

She smiled and settled back against him. Her arm went around his waist. He pulled the blanket higher over both of them.

Outside the window the night was quiet. Inside the room it felt full. Full of the things they had said and the things they didn’t need to say. Alex closed his eyes and let the weight of her against him sink in.

For once his head wasn’t racing quite as loud. The doubt was still there, quiet in the background. But the closeness was louder. The way she had made space for him. The way she looked at him like she saw all the awkward parts and wanted them anyway.

He held her a little tighter. Not for sex. Just because he could. Just because she was here and real and his in a way that went deeper than bodies.

And for the first time since the words had slipped out during that first night, he let himself think maybe this could last.
