The Doctor's Office

“Well, I spoke with Megan of Human Resources yesterday.” Jessie explained. “She said something that I found interesting. Apparently you’re behind on your medical appointments.”

“What’s THAT supposed to mean?!” Lauren balked. “I just went to my doctor last week!”

“Maybe,” Jessie began as she smiled evilly, “but did you get your flu shot that day?”

“What?” Lauren asked, confusion in her voice. She then shook her head and continued, “Why would I –“

“Well, it’s a good thing I scheduled an appointment for you today.” Jessie said, her evil smile still plastered on her face.

Lauren turned pale as she looked forward, a look of terror on her face. Jessie chuckled as she continued to pull Lauren along by her wrist. After about twenty minutes (or twenty years in the mortified Lauren’s mind), Jessie finally stopped in front of a large white building with glass doors. The doors opened as Jessie and Lauren walked through the doorway and into the lobby. Jessie walked up to the reception desk and rang the bell.

“Can I help you today, Ma’am?” the receptionist – a man about Lauren’s age – asked as he walked out from a door in the back.

“Yes, we’re here to see Dr. Manchester.” Jessie said.

“Down the hall, third door on your right.” The receptionist said, pointing to a door on his left. He then looked down at Lauren, who was currently trying to avoid eye contact with this man, and smiled. “You have a lovely daughter, Ma’am.”

“Thank you, young man.” Jessie responded, a giggle in her voice.

Lauren, however, was not laughing. This man – who was her exact age – had just mistaken her for a child! Lauren felt her cheeks go crimson as she looked down.

Jessie and Lauren walked forward as the door opened to reveal the hallway. After a seconds of walking, Jessie stopped outside one of the doors. Lauren looked up and saw the sign on the door. It read, “Dr. Sarah Manchester, M.D.”. Lauren’s heart almost stopped when she read the word underneath the doctor’s name, “Pediatrics”.

Lauren’s eyes went wide as her jaw dropped. A pediatrician? She actually scheduled me to be seen by a pediatrician?! Lauren thought to herself as she began to hyperventilate. How far was Jessie going to take this? Jessie giggled to herself as she opened the door.
