Does Mike impress Leo?

The Dinner goes great

Chapter 12 by MRJT

By six-thirty, Leo was standing in their living room, shifting his weight nervously while Maya put the finishing touches on her hair. He wore a crisp, dark green button-down shirt, his glasses sparkling under the overhead light, looking every bit the bookish, polite young professional. "Are you sure about this, Maya?" he asked gently, adjusting his collar. "It's really nice of him to invite us, but... I just want to make sure we aren't intruding."

"Not at all!" Maya said, stepping out of the bedroom in a simple floral sundress that fit her 10-stone figure beautifully. She walked over and smoothed his shirt collar, kissing his cheek. "Mike was so insistent. He really wants to meet you, Leo. He told me he wants you to feel completely confident that I'm in safe hands whenever he's helping me out." Her eyes shone with that boundless, trusting warmth, and Leo couldn't help but smile back, his initial skepticism melting under her cheerful optimism.

Promptly at seven, they walked down the hall and knocked on Mike’s door. When it opened, Leo was genuinely caught off guard. Expecting the unkempt, greasy figure Maya had loosely described from her morning unpacking, standing before them was a neatly groomed, balding man in a dark navy polo and crisp trousers. The scent of fresh linen and seared steak wafted from the tidy, brightly lit apartment behind him.

"Leo! Maya! Welcome, welcome," Mike said with a warm, deep voice, stepping aside and offering a broad, friendly hand to Leo. "It is so good to finally meet you, man. Maya’s told me all about your IT work and how hard you've been working to get you two settled in."

Leo shook his hand, surprised by the firm, welcoming grip. "Thanks for having us, Mike. Your place looks great, and something smells amazing."

"Just putting some steaks on the stove," Mike said with a casual, fatherly chuckle, ushering them inside toward a neatly set dining table with three wine glasses and a bottle of red. "I know how crazy, and stressful moving week is, so I figured the least I could do for my new neighbors was cook a decent meal."

Throughout the evening, Mike put on a masterclass in calculated charm. He poured wine for Leo and Maya, keeping the conversation firmly focused on Leo’s career, their childhood history, and their plans for the apartment. Whenever Mike complimented Maya—noting her bright energy or how remarkably hard she worked on the boxes—he directed the praise straight to Leo. "You've got an absolute gem here, Leo," Mike said warmly over dinner, cutting into a steak. "A girl that sweet and dedicated? You’re a lucky guy. My only goal here is to make sure she get taken advantage of."

Sitting beside Maya, watching Mike host with such respectful, grounded hospitality, Leo felt the last of his analytical defenses break down. He saw a lonely, middle-aged guy who simply wanted to be a good neighbor and possible a father figure for them both.

Maya, meanwhile, sat beaming between the two men she trusted most in her new life. Seeing Leo relax and laugh at Mike's jokes filled her heart with pure, giddy joy. As Mike refilled their glasses and leaned back with an easy smile, Mike knew his careful transformation had worked perfectly: Leo was completely on his side, and the door to Maya’s world was swung wide open.

The clock on the wall read just past ten when Leo and Maya finally stood up from the dining table, full, relaxed, and laughing over a story Mike had shared about the building’s quirks. The evening had flown by in a blur of easy conversation, good food, and shared smiles. Leo stepped forward, extending his hand to Mike with a warmth that hadn't been there when they first knocked on the door.

"Honestly, Mike, thank you for tonight," Leo said sincerely, his glasses shifting slightly as he gave the older man a firm, genuine handshake. "The steaks were incredible, but more than that, I really appreciate you looking out for Maya. With my long hours at the office right now, it brings a huge weight off my shoulders knowing she has a good, reliable neighbor down the hall."

"Think nothing of it, Leo," Mike replied smoothly, his low voice dripping with earnest camaraderie as he clapped a heavy, reassuring hand onto Leo’s shoulder. "We're neighbors; we look out for each other. You two just focus on settling in, and I’ll make sure they treat Maya like the absolute star she is. You’ve got a bright future ahead of you both."

As they stepped back out into the quiet hallway, Maya offered Mike a brilliant, sleepy wave. "Goodnight, Mike! See you tomorrow"

"Night, Maya. Sleep well, you two," Mike murmured, leaning against his doorframe with a warm, fatherly nod as they walked the short distance to their own door.

Inside their apartment, the quiet sanctuary greeted them with familiar comfort. Leo locked the deadbolt, clicked the night latch, and turned around, letting out a long, contented breath as he pulled Maya into his arms. He rested his chin softly against the top of her ginger head, swaying gently with her in the warm glow of the hallway light.

"He really is a great guy, isn't he?" Leo admitted, his tone filled with relief and mild self-deprecation. "I'll be honest, when you first mentioned a neighbor helping you out, my overprotective brain immediately worried he might be pushy or weird. But seeing him tonight—how much respect he has for you, how grounded he is—I feel totally comfortable with him. He genuinely just wants to see you succeed."

Maya nestled her face into the crook of Leo’s neck, her heart soaring with pure, unadulterated happiness. Hearing her sweet, logical boyfriend give Mike his full stamp of approval was the final piece of the puzzle. Every tiny, subconscious hesitation she had carried earlier in the day evaporated into thin air, completely replaced by her naive, trusting optimism.

"I told you he was sweet!" Maya giggled softly, pressing a lingering kiss to Leo’s cheek as they walked toward the bedroom, hand in hand. "Tomorrow is going to be so amazing. I can't wait."

Down the carpeted hallway, behind his securely closed door, Mike poured himself a small glass of whiskey and looked at his neat, tidy reflection in the living room window. A dark, quiet satisfaction settled in his chest. The boy was completely sold, the girl was utterly captivated, and tomorrow’s meeting at the agency was going to take everything to a whole new level.
