The Crossing
Elorae stood alone in her lab, surrounded by the implements of her trade and beige walls that faded into the ether when she ignored them too long. The air tasted sterile.
It was all her fault. If she had just stayed within the boundaries prescribed to her by her supervisors, if she hadn’t been seduced by her creativity, she would not have been in the situation she found herself. Too many times she had slipped up, given in to temptation, but this time the consequences would be far beyond anything she’d experienced in the past.
Vaelith had taken the seed of doubt. By now he had undoubtedly used it. On its own, the seed was a marvelous creation, an idea that, had it been sanctioned, would have earned Elorae commendation. But instead, in order to hide her transgression, it had become a weapon - subtle, corrosive, dangerous, and now loose. She could feel it in the trembling edge of her reality, the static under her skin. Something had shifted. Something fundamental.
Her world—this world—was fragile. It ran on certainty, on structure, on unquestioned hierarchy. That seed was a solvent. It would dissolve everything if it spread unchecked.
Next he would come for her.
She knew too much. Vaelith would not leave her alive. He was too thorough for that.
Unless...
Her hands trembled as she activated her power. The crack still hovered near the floor, like a shimmer in the air, barely perceptible. Most wouldn't notice it. Most wouldn't dare to notice it.
And through it, she had let something spill. A thought. An impulse. An idea.
That original idea. Not the seed of doubt she had given to her enemy, the one that had brought her to this mess. The one that had slipped into the next tier of reality, fragile and unfinished.
She dropped to her knees and placed her hand near the crack, careful not to touch it yet. Her eyes narrowed in concentration, tuning out the soft hum of the ether behind her.
It was there.
She felt it immediately. The idea still lingered on the other side. It had taken root. But it pulsed with a potential yet unrealized, like a sleeping heart.
Elorae's pulse quickened. It needed help. It needed encouragement. It needed her.
She could cross. She could find it. Shape it. Perhaps with enough time, with enough encouragement, she could find salvation in the mistake that had doomed her. Perhaps she could still save her world.
No one returned from the next tier. Not that she'd ever heard of. It wasn't forbidden—it was just... not done. Not possible.
But most people weren't like her.
She turned toward the ether. It hovered, beige and benign, observing without eyes. It knew what she intended. But it offered no opinion. It never did. Its silence was its own kind of judgment.
She turned back to the crack and reached her hand over it.
The surface of the air shimmered, then bulged inward as if gravity had reversed. A tear in the rules of this place, and maybe all places.
"I will find it," she whispered. "And I will come back."
Then she was gone.
Popped out of existence.
The ether blinked once, slowly. Then it was still.
