Emma's phone buzzed on the nightstand, pulling her from the lazy haze of an afternoon nap in Damari's bed. Sunlight sliced through the half-open blinds of his downtown loft, casting stripes across the rumpled sheets that still carried the faint salt of their morning sweat. Greg had been gone four days now, holed up in some conference room in Chicago, his texts coming in predictable bursts - miss you, stay safe, call me later. She hadn't, not yet. Instead, she'd packed a bag and went cross-town to Damari's place, the one with the exposed brick walls and the king-sized bed that swallowed them whole.
She'd been here since Monday, the routine settling in like a second skin: coffee on his balcony overlooking the bay, her head on his chest while they watched TV, his hands wandering under her tank top until clothes hit the floor. Last night, after sex - which now has become lovemaking - he'd pulled her close in bed and said it. "Emma, I've fallen in love with you." The words hung there, heavy, his breath warm on her neck. She froze, heart slamming, because yeah, she felt it too - the way his charm pulled at her, the quiet mornings when he'd trace her spine with his fingertips. But Dara's voice echoed in her head: "never fall in love with your bull." It's the rule that keeps it clean, keeps Greg safe. "We can't," she'd whispered back to Damari, turning to kiss him anyway, her body saying what her mouth wouldn't.
Later that day, while Damari was training a clients, Emma met Dara for lunch at a spot off the beach - a casual shack with plastic tables and the ocean breeze cutting through the humidity. Dara was already there, sunglasses perched on her head, her sundress hugging her curves as she scrolled her phone. Trevon wasn't around and Ron was at work. They ordered ceviche and iced teas, the kind spiked with rum that Dara insisted on.
Emma showed worry, unable to make eye contact with Dara. Suddenly, the words bubbling up before she could stop them. "Damari told me he loves me." It came out quiet, but Dara's fork paused mid-air, her eyes sharpening.
Dara set her drink down, leaning in. "And? Do you love him?"
Emma swallowed, the rum burning in her throat. "I... Yeah....... Yeah, it's deep..... More than just the physical. We spend all this time together when Greg's away - nights out, mornings in bed. It feels real."
Dara's expression hardened, turning to anger, the easy vibe shattering. "End it! Now!" She said it flat, no room for debate, her fingers tapping the table. "This is how it ruins everything. You think Greg won't notice? Loosing that spark for Greg when you come home to him after being with Damari? The way you light up talking about him? I told you the rule for a reason - never - ever - fall in love with your bull. It poisons the whole dynamic. Trevon and I - it's fire, but it doesn't touch what Ron and I have. You let this go further, and your marriage is fucked!"
Emma nodded, the logic slamming her like a knock-out punch. She knew it - had known it from the start, echoing Dara's warnings. But saying it out loud? Her chest tightened. "I get it. Totally. But... I can't ...... I can't cut him off now. Not yet."
Dara sighed, rubbing her temple. "You're playing with fire girl. End it now before it burns your whole life down."
After their lunch, Emma walked along the beach alone - trying to figure out how to make these relationships work. Could she love two men - equally - at the same time? Would they agree to a love triangle? Is such a thing possible?
Emma drove back to Damari's that afternoon, the sun dipping low, her mind a mess. He was out running errands, leaving her alone with the loft's quiet. She sat alone on the couch. Should she break-up with Damari? Should she keep going to find out how it evolves? She started to become overwhelmed with worry and uncertainty. She decided not to take any action for now, and see how things progress.
