The Calm Before the Storm

Chapter 56 by foxloversi

The dimly lit living room was thick with tension as Maria, Igor, Rachel, and Ethan huddled together, the glow of Maria's phone casting a ghostly pallor on their faces as they watched the video clip, which showed Maria and Rachel tearing through the drug gang and draining them, one by one.

"Shit," Rachel muttered, her voice low and tense. "Who the fuck recorded this?"

"We fucked up, Rach!" Maria snapped, cursing under her breath. She felt a cold dread wrapping itself around her heart like a steel vice. "We left one of them alive, remember? When they started fleeing… the first one got away. That bastard must've recorded it while hiding at the edge of the alley."

"Fuck me," Rachel agreed, her blue eyes flashing with anger and frustration. "We were too caught up in the blood frenzy to notice him…"

As they rewatched the video and read Nikolai's following message again and again, fear and uncertainty swirled within the group like a dark storm. The text seemed to sear itself into their minds:

"'Good job with the training, Maria, killing cattle out in the open. You can't imagine to what lengths the Order had to go to bring that viral clip offline. I'm taking control in my own hands and when I return tomorrow, I don't want to see a single trace of that worthless excuse of a vampire that you created. Deal with her however you care, or I'm dealing with you."

"Jesus Christ," Igor whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "I don’t know this Nikolai guy, but this sounds bad."

"Tell me something I don't know," Maria shot back, her eyes ablaze with fury.

"Alright, alright," Rachel said, placing a calming hand on Maria's shoulder. She could feel the tension vibrating through her friend's body. "Let's think this through. We know who recorded the video, and we know Nikolai's coming for us. Now, we just need to figure out what to do next."

"Well thank God we have you on our side, Captain Obvious," Maria groaned, unleashing sarcasm. “I guess Nikolai will just wait, patiently twiddling his fingers while you come up with an ingenious plan."

Rachel rolled her eyes, but she knew Maria was just lashing out due to stress.

"Maria," Rachel whispered softly, her bright blue eyes filled with concern. She moved closer, wrapping her arms around Maria's trembling form. "We're going to get through this, alright? I'll stand by you, no matter what."

"Even if that means facing Nikolai?" Maria choked out, her voice barely a whisper.

"Especially if it means facing Nikolai," Rachel replied fiercely. "We can fight him together. But if you think it would be better, I can also run and find some safe spot until all this calms down. No arguments from me this time - I'll do whatever you want."

"Thanks, Rach. Sorry for…" Maria murmured, her eyes welling with gratitude. The thought of them staying together, whether they fought or fled, brought her some measure of comfort. "I don't want us to separate, not after everything we've been through."

"Then we won't," Rachel promised, determination etched into her beautiful features.

While Rachel consoled Maria, Ethan took the phone and watched the video. He grimaced at the video with disgust and as he opened his mouth to voice his disapproval, he was instantly met with Rachel's warning gaze, reminding him of their previous agreement. He snapped his mouth shut, swallowing his objections for now.

Igor, on the other hand, seemed unfazed by the brutal display. Having witnessed the alley carnage firsthand, he watched the video a few times without any particular reaction. After reading Nikolai's message again, he finally spoke up, his voice firm and resolute. "It seems we're going to fight to the death if Rachel stays here. Maria, are you sure we can take him down?"

Maria hesitated, her gaze clouded with doubt. "I don't know, Igor. He's older, much more powerful…"

"You’re forgetting I’m still here." Ethan cut in, silencing the gasps and glares that followed his interruption. "I have experience with vampires like Nikolai. There might be a way to…"

"Wait, are we sure he’s really going to come tomorrow evening?" Rachel asked. "How can Nikolai be back so soon if he's still in Europe? He's a vampire; he can't travel during the day."

Ethan rubbed his chin thoughtfully, his piercing blue eyes narrowed in concentration. "The Order has an organized network of cargo flights all around the world," he explained slowly, his mild British accent adding a touch of gravity to his words. "Vampires are hidden in coffins or large suitcases as special cargo. And for the inner members like Nikolai, they have their own planes with sealed windows, allowing them to travel wherever and whenever they please."

"Shit," Maria muttered under her breath, her golden eyes reflecting the pale light that filled the room. "So, there's nothing standing in his way?"

“Well… no. Considering the time difference with Europe… It's safe to assume he wrote this after he had already arranged everything regarding his flight,” Ethan replied.

"There’s always the option for us all to just leave," Maria suggested, her voice trembling slightly with fear. "Find another haven somewhere far away from here."

"Running won't solve anything," Ethan countered gently. "We have a great chance at ambushing him here, especially since he won't be expecting to fight a vampire hunter as well. If you flee now, you'll be forever on the run, always looking over your shoulder."

Igor nodded in agreement, his warm brown eyes meeting Maria's gaze with unwavering determination. "Ethan's right. We stand a better chance if we stay and fight, together."

Rachel placed a comforting hand on Maria's arm, her vivid blue eyes filled with fierce resolve. "We've got this, Maria. I'm not going anywhere without you, no one is. We'll face Nikolai together, and finish this once and for all."

The air in the room seemed to shift as their collective resolve solidified. The tension that had gripped them eased, replaced by the thrill of anticipation.

"Alright," Maria agreed, her voice steady and strong. "We stay then. I’ll try to reason with him first, but he isn’t really the one to seek compromise. So, most likely, we’ll have to fight him."

As the moon continued its ascent through the night sky, the four unlikely allies prepared for the battle that lay ahead, united by either love, loyalty, or a thirst for revenge.

As Maria studied the faces of her comrades she couldn't help but notice the subtle changes in their dynamic. Ethan and Rachel sat side by side on the sofa, their knees brushing against each other like leaves caught in a tender breeze. The gazes they exchanged seemed to linger, as if whispers of secrets passed between them.

"Alright," Maria said with a playful smirk on her face. "At least we’re all on the same page. I see you two have gotten... a bit closer." Her eyes remained fixed on the fresh bite mark visible on Ethan's neck. "Rachel, I take it you had a fruitful talk with Ethan, huh?"

Rachel met her friend's gaze and gave a small, knowing nod in confirmation. "Let's just say our noble hunter is bit more open to cooperation now."

Ethan's lips twitched into a slight smile, the bitterness that once clung to his voice like a vine now replaced by a softer, more melodic tone. "Indeed, we discovered some... common ground, shall we say. Now, about this plan..."

Maria couldn’t quite decipher if this change in his behavior was solely due to Rachel's influence or if there was another motivating factor. He appeared resolute in confronting Nikolai, almost eager even. Maybe Rachel held some answers that could shed light on the situation...

"Right," Maria agreed, turning her attention back to the matter at hand. "We need to make sure Nikolai doesn't suspect anything. My main concern is him sensing a human presence when he arrives."

"That’s not an issue, Maria," Ethan interjected in a calming tone. His hunter instincts kicked in, filling him with calm confidence. "I do have a way to mask my presence, so fear not. However, there's still the issue of him smelling fresh human presence in the mansion." He glanced pointedly at Rachel, the scent of their passion still lingering in the air around them like an invisible cloud. “It’s not an easy feat to mask the scent of two humans from an 800 years old vampire…”

"True," Maria mused, worry creasing her brow. "How can we mask that?"

Rachel’s eyes fell upon her pack of cigarettes lying discarded on the coffee table. A spark of inspiration lit up her face, and she grinned. "You know, I might have a solution for that."

"Really? What've you got in mind?"

"Let's just say it involves two packs of Marlboros and two vampire chain smokers," Rachel smiled, her grin widening. "I think it should work."

"Alright," Maria said, determination etching her beautiful features. "I think we’ve got everything covered. If we work together, the three of us should be able to bring Nikolai down."

"Three?" Igor interjected, his warm brown eyes flashing with indignation. "Now, wait just a minute. Don’t even think about cutting me out again…"

Maria looked at him, her eyes softening. "Igor, I know you're willing to help, but this is different. Nikolai is a powerful vampire, and I can't risk you getting hurt again."

"You should really think this through, mate," Ethan added, a note of resignation in his voice. "This might be too dangerous for you. We can’t afford to get you… uhm, hurt or worse."

Igor's jaw clenched, and his fists balled at his sides. "The hell we can’t! I'm getting tired of being treated like a damn damsel in distress. I can handle myself!"

"You know guys, I reckon I'm siding with biker boy on this," Rachel tossed her two cents into the argument. "If he's game, why hold him back? More fists in the fight, better odds we got."

"Thank you! Finally, a voice of reason," Igor declared, his face lighting up as he offered Rachel a thankful grin. However, she didn't acknowledge it - her gaze was sternly fixed on Ethan and the vampire hunter quietly lowered his head in response. Maria observed the understated power play between them - Rachel had clearly established a strong link with Ethan before. Perhaps even too strong...

She caught Igor’s intense stare and after a long moment she sighed, conceding defeat. "Alright, Igor, but I’ll need you to promise me one thing."

"What's that?"

"You have to promise me you'll do exactly as I say, no questions asked. You’ll remain in cover and will jump into action only if really needed. And if I tell you to get out, no arguments, alright?"

"Yes, ma'am," Igor said, saluting her with a smirk.

"Not funny," Maria said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. "Alright, now that we're all on the same page, let's get some rest for tomorrow. Sunrise is coming soon and Rachel and I are going to sleep, as should you two. Come, Rach."

The two vampiresses strolled towards the shaded bedroom, laughing and exchanging hushed words. Igor strained to hear Maria's voice as she said, "You have to fill me in on what happened with Ethan..."

Igor needed answers too, but of a different kind. He stopped Ethan before he left the living room.

"Ethan," Igor began, his voice low and tinged with a hint of suspicion, "do you fancy enlightening me?"

"Eh?" Ethan's brows furrowed in confusion.

"I have this feeling that you're concealing something from me. I'm offering you a chance to be upfront with me and spill whatever needs spilling."

A puzzled expression washed over Ethan's face. "I'm not certain what you're getting at, old chap. Are you referring to the, uhm, situation with Rachel and myself?"

"No," Igor dismissed quickly, waving his hand dismissively. His warm brown eyes hardened slightly. "That's none of my concern, although it's plain as day to anyone who looks that you two shared more than just words tonight. What I'm really asking is about your deal with me."

"With you? I-I don't..." Ethan stuttered out.

"Enough," Igor interrupted sharply, his patience visibly thinning. He ran a hand through his dark hair in frustration. "You know, I'd hoped you would be more forthcoming but apparently that was too much to ask for." He sighed heavily before continuing, "Listen here, Ethan. I may not be some posh British vampire hunter like yourself but don't mistake me for a fool either." His gaze turned steely as he locked eyes with Ethan. "I've noticed you constantly observing me, scrutinizing every move I make like I'm some kid with special needs." His voice dropped lower as he added pointedly, "And how eager you seemed to keep me away from the fight for some reason... Care to explain what's going on there?"

"Uhm, as Maria said, there's a bit of worry about your safety and-" Ethan initiated but his sentence was abruptly severed as Igor's hand darted out, seizing the collar of his shirt with a firm grip.

"Those are her worries and they make sense," Igor retorted. "But they ain't your worries. What do you care about my safety, huh? Look, I don't want this turning into some big drama. So why won't you just lay it out straight?"

"Perhaps if you'd loosen your grip we could engage in a more civilized chat."

"Spit it out then," Igor released his grip.

"Well..." Ethan hesitated for a beat before pushing on. "I suspect you might be more crucial to our cause than you initially thought."

"What cause? Whose fuckin cause are we talkin' about here?"

"Well… the human cause, of course," Ethan clarified with an understated shrug. "You haven't noticed anything unusual about yourself, have you?"

"Me? In what way?" Igor queried skeptically.

"I'm not entirely certain yet," Ethan confessed, smoothing down his collar theatrically. "However, it seems that you may carry a resistance to vampire manipulation."

"A resistance?" Igor echoed, brows knotting together in confusion. "You mean that I’m immune to become a vampire?"

"Not exactly," Ethan corrected, "more like an immunity to their corruption and mind control. I don’t know what causes it. It could be just random or a genetic fluke but I've never seen anything like this before. There were only rumours and legends from the past, but we never had a chance to see one with your mutation in modern times."

"And this is a problem because…" Igor trailed off, his words dripping with sarcasm.

"No, you don’t understand, mate," Ethan sighed. "It's not a cause for concern; on the contrary, it's a bloody boon! Think about it, if we could isolate whatever it is that makes you immune, we could potentially create a vaccine or c-"

"Alright, alright, I get it. Y’all could use me as a bloody guinea pig," Igor interrupted, rolling his eyes. "Well, you can forget about it. I ain't some lab rat for you to experiment on."

"I never said that! I merely thought you should be aware of your potential value to our cause."

"Well, now I am," Igor said, crossing his arms over his chest. "And as flattering as it is to be of interest to His Majesty's Secret Vampire Hunters, I'll pass on your offer, thank you very much."

Ethan sighed. "I understand your skepticism and I assure you, my intentions are pure. I simply think it's something worth exploring."

"Well, I don't," Igor shot back, "and I ain't lettin' you or anyone else use me as a lab rat, understood?"

Ethan held up his hands in a placating gesture. "Alright, alright, I get it. Let’s focus on the matter at hand for now. Ok? We have a quite an important day ahead of us…”

A grin tugged at the corners of Igor's mouth, a rare moment of genuine humor. "Finally, something we agree on," he said in his deep voice.

Ethan's blue eyes were bright spots against his otherwise hidden face. Igor barely made out a slight nod from him—an acceptance of their unexpected agreement.

"Goodnight, Ethan," Igor said. He paused for a moment before adding with a touch of sarcasm, "Or what's left of it."

As Ethan’s figure retreated into his room, Igor turned and began to walk toward his room within Nikolai’s grand mansion. The silence of the night wrapped around him like a comforting blanket as he strolled down the ornate hallway, his boots sounding softly against polished marble floors.

Reaching his door, he cast one last glance at the star-studded sky through an arched window at the end of the corridor—a peaceful sight considering recent dangerous encounters.

Climbing into bed that night amidst solitude, thoughts whirled in his mind like leaves swept up by wind. The impending conflict with Nikolai weighed heavily on him—a brewing storm ready to break loose any second. And then there was Maria; she stirred feelings within him he never knew existed. His ability to resist vampires raised questions that troubled him—why was he different? What did this mean for his role in this bizarre world?

With these thoughts echoing in his mind, sleep finally claimed Igor, leaving him unaware of what new challenges the next day would bring.
