The Best Case I Ever Had!

The room was filled with everything from government officials, reporters, special victims units, and even the head of the FBI. The room had been absolutely electric these past couple hours as me and the defense were at each other’s throats, destroying every piece of evidence that the other brought up. I had to admit, they were good… and it was no doubt why.
Ramon, one of the greatest defense attorneys in the state, was sitting across the isle from me. He was ruthless, mean, and had no shame in using just about every dirty tactic in and out of the book to get the desired outcome he wanted. Still though, in a case this loaded against him, it was an uphill battle.
My team brought photo and video evidence, witness testimonies, DNA found on the crime scene, and once again brought back the fact that this man was already on parole for very similar crimes he committed in the past. Most of these Ramon had responses for, but others he tried to deny with belligerent hearsay arguments.
The defendant, a man known only as Danny, isn’t exactly the most dangerous man I had put away in my life, but he was the most influential. Thought to be one of the leading members of the New York Chain Gang, I knew that putting him away would do numbers for me and my firm. He was obviously angry, as this wasn’t the first time I’ve seen him in court, but now the scales were much higher, and his sentence would be much worse.
After hours of deliberation and screaming from across the isle it felt like if a pin dropped this room could turn into a riot. I feel like the judge sensed it too, so as he sent the jury away to deliberate he sent us out for recess, to enter the lobby and let everyone cool their heads.
While out in the lobby I saw Ramon on the phone, definitely stressed and screaming at somebody. It was almost comical seeing a typically calm man such as himself lose his mind over a case like this… especially whenever I’m the reason why he can’t keep his head on straight.
I wanted to go and find Autumn and talk to her a bit, but as soon as I turned away from Ramon to try and find her I practically ran into a man in a dark business suit, with a smile on his face, as he looked up at me slightly.

“Mr. Lee?” He says, his voice calm, confident, but direct. He holds one hand out, and politely I shook it and noticed how firm his grip felt. “My name is Musa Phoenix. I work with a company that has had their eyes on you for quite a long time.” He says, his confidence still unwavering in his voice as he introduces himself.
“I’m sorry Mr. Phoenix.” I say bluntly as I pull my hand back, but still keep my neutral demeanor. “I am perfectly happy with my own firm. I do not see myself transferring any time in the immediate future.” I say quickly, standing my ground, but my words only made the man chuckle.
“Oh no! Sorry, you must misunderstand. I’m not a recruiter.” He says, before hesitating slightly. “At least, not for a law firm. The company I represent is going to be in a bit of legal trouble soon, as a knockoff company has begun to push themselves into our copyright. We were looking for your support in dealing with this matter.” He says, raising an eyebrow softly as he stared up at me, his look almost daring me to refuse.
“I…” I hesitate slightly. “I don’t usually work with large companies Mr. Phoenix.” I say somewhat hesitantly, and before I could speak more I felt a quick tap on my shoulder, and I saw my saving grace behind me in the form of Autumn as she smiled wide and pulled me into a hug.
“Oh baby I’m so proud of you!” She says nice and loud which made Ramon snarl out of the corner of our eyes… which made us both chuckle. Musa cleared his throat a bit behind me though, grabbing my attention once more as he stood up straight.
“We can continue to talk about this after this case ends.” He says with a confident smile, giving Autumn a quick nod before walking away and disappearing into the crowd without another word.
“Who the hell was that?” Autumn asks, and I just shrug the question off as the two of us continued to talk and enjoy ourselves as we waited for our time to be over and for us to be called back into the room.
