How do you respond?

Tell her how she should have handled it

"I couldn't believe it. I was just trying to help her find something that she liked and that fit her well, but she completely misunderstood my intentions. I just wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear," Eve says.

"You know, Eve, I think you really should have treated that customer better. It's your job to be patient and helpful, no matter how difficult the customer may be. And maybe it's a bit sizist of the store not to carry those large sizes."

Riley immediately gets angry and says, "That's not fair. Eve was just trying to help her find something that fit her properly. It's not her responsibility that the store doesn't carry every size. You know how I used to struggle to find sizes, and I wasn't that big."

Eve looks uncomfortable and tries to change the subject. "Um, can we talk about something else? I don't really want to dwell on it."

You apologize to Eve and to Riley for your thoughtless comment. "I'm sorry, Eve. I didn't mean to imply that it was your fault. I was just trying to give you some constructive criticism. I'm sorry if I offended you."

Riley accepts your apology and the group moves on to another topic. However, you make a mental note to be more mindful of your words in the future, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like customer service.
