What's next?
Tell David about your options and ask for his opinion. Should you go back to Matt or does he want to stay with you as Mia. And what kind of life should we build together?
You take a deep breath, squeezing David's hand as you both stand on the shoreline. The decision weighing on your mind feels monumental, and you desperately want to share it with him.
"David, I need to talk to you about something important," you begin, your heart racing. "About me, about us..."
He turns to face you fully, his expression open and attentive. "Of course, what is it?"
You open your mouth to tell him about the app, about the choice you need to make by midnight—to return to being Matt or permanently remain as Mia—but the words simply won't form. Your throat tightens painfully, as though invisible hands are squeezing your vocal cords. The more you try to push the explanation out, the more your breathing becomes labored.
"I..." you struggle, eyes widening in panic. "I need to... make a decision about..."
David frowns with concern, stepping closer. "Hey, are you alright? You look like you're about to pass out."
You try a different approach. "Do you ever think about Matt?"
David's expression shifts subtly, becoming slightly unfocused. "Your friend? What made you think of him?"
The cognitive disconnect is jarring. He now remembers Matt as your friend, not as the person you used to be. The neural integration has completely rewritten his understanding of reality.
"Nothing, just... wondering what kind of future you see for us," you pivot, feeling defeated by the app's constraints.
David's face softens immediately. "I see everything with you, Mia. I know it's fast, but when something's right..." He pulls you closer, one hand cupping your cheek. "I've been thinking about us getting our own place when we get back to London. Something that's truly ours from the start."
"Our own place?" you echo, surprised by how appealing the idea feels.
"Yes. And maybe down the road, who knows? Marriage, family—if that's what you want. I just know I don't want to waste any more time pretending this isn't the most real thing I've ever felt."
His words sink in deeply, resonating with something inside you that feels completely authentic despite everything. The neural integration has made these feelings—your attraction to him, your desire for this life—entirely genuine.
"I want that too," you hear yourself saying, and it doesn't feel like a lie. "I just needed to know you were sure."
He kisses you then, deeply and with such conviction that passersby smile knowingly at the obvious display of affection. When he pulls back, he looks into your eyes with absolute certainty.
"I've never been more sure of anything," he says. "Now, let's head back to London so I can take my gorgeous girlfriend to dinner at The Lobster Pot."
As he leads you toward the car park, your phone pulses once in your pocket—a silent reminder of the decision that still awaits you, one you'll have to make entirely on your own.
