Technology: Neural Implants

While neural implants have been worked on for over a century and have existed in some form or other for the better part of three decades, it is only with recent development in bio-computing that they have really been able to live up to their potential.

Neural implants work by having a regular microchip installed in the patient's head as well a cocktail of A-Life organisms into their cerebrospinal fluid. These organisms act as a bio-computer to supplement the chip as well as an interface between the chip and the brain. Upon injection, this cocktail has already been programmed with the deep learning network structure necessary to learn to read the user's brain and transmit the information back to the microchip. Since every brain is different however, it is necessary for the user to train the network to correctly identify thoughts. This process often requires months of computer aided training but once over, the microchip is able to correctly understand the user's thoughts and respond to them accordingly.

Modern neural implants are a new and expensive technology but clinical trial have already demonstrated that a direct link to the internet improves the execution of complicated tasks, especially when paired with a retinal interface. As a results, officers of the Gaia Initiative have been given access to recent models of implants, with the hope that these may help in their duties. Each officer has access through their implants to their Ark-ship's server in which the "Codex", a repertory of mission pertinent information, is stored.
