Talk to Heather on the way back down

The high-altitude wind continues to whistle across the rocks as the women pull their heavy winter layers back on. You step to the front of the line cutting a path through the sub-zero chill as you begin to lead the group back down the steep, snow-dusted mountain trail.

As the path narrows into a rocky switchback, the group naturally strings out. Dana stays up near the front, casually talking shop with a quietly supportive Lauren, while Maya and a intensely quiet, brooding Vicky lag a bit further behind. Seizing the moment, you slow your pace slightly, letting the line shift until Heather is walking directly alongside you.

The recently divorced socialite still looks thoroughly overwhelmed. Her winter fleece is zipped tight up to her chin, but her cheeks are still heavily flushed from the raw, explicit contact of the demonstration. Every time her hiking boots strike the gravel, her gaze shifts nervously to the ground, her hands buried deep inside her pockets.

“Heather,” you say softly, your voice low enough so it doesn’t carry up the ridge to Dana or Lauren.

She flinches slightly, her warm hazel eyes snapping up to meet yours. Her chest rises and falls beneath her heavy coat, a lingering trace of that breathless panic returning to her face. “Oh... Mark. Hi.”

“I wanted to apologize for what happened back there,” you tell her gently, keeping your tone grounded and sincere. “I had absolutely no idea what Dana was planning to do, or that she was going to call you forward like that. I didn’t mean to put you on the spot.”

Heather stops walking for a fraction of a second before quickly matching your stride again. She lets out a soft, nervous breath that clouds in the freezing air, her fingers tightly gripping the fabric inside her pockets.

“You don’t... you don’t have to apologize, Mark,” she murmurs, her voice trembling slightly, though it’s clearly not just from the cold. She looks at you, her dilated hazel eyes full of an intense, raw vulnerability that she can’t quite hide. “It was just... a lot. Dana is incredibly intense, and I... I wasn’t expecting to be handled like that in front of everyone.”

She swallows hard, looking away toward the distant, snow-capped peaks of the valley. A small, self-conscious smile tugs at the corner of her lips, her tone dropping into a deeply intimate, private register. “But I know it was just a lesson. Honestly... it’s been a very long time since a man has looked at me, let alone... touched me with that kind of confidence. It just caught me completely off guard.”

Before you can reply, the trail steepens, requiring you to step down a massive, icy stone ledge to ensure the path is safe for the women behind you.
