Chapter 186

Time to make a choice.
Take him outside.
"I got this." I nodded to Maria, and stepped forward. Nikki and George were still involved in a bit of a harangue, so I turned my attention to the older man, who seemed pretty much unscathed. He was furiously speaking in a foreign language to a woman I recognized as Nikki's mother. He gestured several times to George, and then to the front of the restaurant.
I walked over as calmly as I could, escorted by Maria, who kept a firm grip on my arm, not for security, but rather because there was a heck of a crowd, and we didn't want to get separated.
"Hey, uh... sorry to butt in here, but what is he saying?" I asked at a break in the conversation. The older woman with the salt and pepper hair appraised me for a moment, before recognizing me from earlier.
"George has to go. We're going to call the police."
"Woah, woah..." Maria fished in a small floral bag that she had with her. "You don't want to call the local cops." She flipped open a small black wallet to reveal a blue and gold seven pointed badge with four numbers emblazoned below the seal of California. "If you aren't local, they'll hold him until somebody coughs up dough or calls in a local politician. It's not pretty. "
The woman paused for a moment before speaking rapidly in that same foreign language that I later learned was Greek. The older man in the booth nodded at the words before gesturing towards George once again, who was still arguing with Nikki about something. He at least wasn't being held back at this point, but their conversation seemed to be the focus of the entire party at this point.
"You take him out of here!" The older man spoke once again, gesturing towards the arguing couple. "You take them BOTH out of here! I'm sick of this! I am the head of this house, and they are both..."
"Roger, got it." I nodded beginning to elbow my way through the crowd. I knew a speech coming on when I heard it. Seemed that the best option at this point was to just get Nikki and her Husband out of here, calm him down, maybe figure it out. I wasn't a marriage counselor, but de-escalation seemed to be the best option at this point.
"Oh, and look who it is. Say George, do you really want to know what I got up to while you spent all your time sitting in the room jacking off?" Nikki smirked at her husband with a grin after noticing that I had reached her side.
"I was working on the presentation!" George snarled back. "Whatever, who the hell cares! Fucking Gus broke my phone!"
"Sir, I'd highly suggest that you calm down and step outside for a second." Maria's voice took on a commanding tone that I recalled from earlier. "I'm not on duty, but I make an exception for domestics."
George seemed ready to retort, his dark eyes flashing angrily, when he noticed the badge that Maria was flashing directly at him. He bit his lip angrily, and inhaled deeply through his nostrils.
"You're hanging out with cops now?" George addressed his wife with a pair of raised hands. "Figures you'd get with a sow."
"I'm gonna let that one go, because you're obviously upset. Do not push it, pendejo." Maria pointed at the glass doors which led towards a small wooden balcony. "I suggest you step outside, take a breath, and tell me and my partner what is going on here."
"Right... right..." The dark haired man practically stomped like a young child towards the glass door, and threw it open nearly dramatically enough to break it had there not been a hydraulic to prevent just such an occurrence. He slammed his hand down on the railing and looked out. I could see the rise and fall of his jacket as he took deep breaths. The glass door swung shut behind him, and we looked on.
"Ok... and now you see why I don't like being around George when he drinks..." Nikki shook her head.
"You shouldn't have taunted him." Maria commented, her face taking on a blank expression. "Calming guys down from this shit is always hard enough without that."
"Sorry. Just... dis was it. De last fucking straw." Nikki commented as the sound of music started up again, and a general murmur began roaming through the crowd and the throng began to break up. I glanced back at the booth where Gus and the remaining first aid crew had gathered. He seemed to be consoling himself with another drink, and was gesturing once again towards the glass doors where George had exited.
Maria followed Nikki's gaze towards the door, and the man slumped against the railing with a dejected look.
"So, you're married to him, how does this always go?" Maria asked, looking at Nikki questioningly.
"Ok... so... well, he'll probably tell me dat he sucks, is a bad person, and is really really sorry." Nikki sighed, rolling her eyes. "Den he'll promise to do better next time, and I'll be looking at about a week or two of him hanging on my every word and trying to prove he's not a jerk."
"And his Grandmother just needs a little money for her operation." I mumbled, an old Marlon Brando line running through my head.
"Yeah... I was having fun. Almost tempted to ask you to just take me home." Nikki shrugged.
"I can't drive to Chicago."
"Your home, kataratos..."
My eyes roamed over the restaurant and took in the pleasant atmosphere. Now that George had exited, the revelry had returned, and I noticed that there seemed to be a general air of contentment through the place. I took in numerous smiles, and the general sense of not belonging had begun to melt away like snow on a spring day. There was so many things I could do, and my head still spun a bit from the drinks I'd had. I had to admit, I half wanted to have another and just forget about the whole situation. I had two wonderful dates with me, neither one of which seemed particularly concerned about the guy on the balcony.
[Note to the Reader! Thank you for enjoying the "Chocolate" ending, at least as far as set up goes. Herein lies the branch point. These endings are primarily going to be gags/jokes and general rip offs of mainstream fiction. Things will be arbitrary, pointless, and will sometimes totally break narrative flow and canon. This is for FUN, after all, so... I plan for these to be like cheap food. Eat all you want, I'll write more.]
