Chapter 24 by JackSimth JackSimth

Other projects?

Switching race, gear, and buffs

We collect the samples as spelled out in our contract, and on the way back to the Veskarium to report, I get to work on my other projects.

The first is replacing my current body, as I expect most of the buffs are tied to that. It's actually surprisingly simple: I build an empty hologram core (from the race) using real UPBs, and use the “AI transformation” effect from the Technomancy Sphere of Spheres of Power to transfer myself into it.

…which turns off my senses until I turn them back on by activating my Hardlight Body… which looks exactly like the one I just left, except slightly transparent… which is an easy fix: Disguise Self handles the transparency problem. The wings are purely decorative now, but that's actually OK: Thanks to Technological Wonders, the Swift Fly spell lasts forever, so I have a faster fly speed that works in vacuum and zero gravity natively, and has better maneuverability to boot.

Mind you, Technological Wonders works on everything, from Mythic's Borrowed Power to random spells, so all of my buffs are now permanent… which means with Borrowed Power, I can get most of the immunities I want for free (although it doesn't make me immune to Mythic causes of those ailments…) and plenty of skill boosters as well. Heroics grants me any Combat feat, so I get it a zillion times for all of the weapons and armor proficiencies, all of the ones I qualify to have. The various basic stat boosting spells make me better at basically everything. The Protection From line of spells renders me immune to a lot of things. The Junk Armor spell gets me Heavy armor with my higher caster level, superior to anything I could buy (and Borrowed Power lets me get some Mythic abilities that let me ignore the max dex and ACP) And on. And on. And on. My spells are all at will, so there's no reason to scrimp.

Of course, the spells render a number of my class choices moot… but that's what Ultimate Versatility is for. Normally the effect would be temporary, but Technological Wonders works on everything, so that one a day feature replacement builds up easily over time: I'm not grabbing per-day limited abilities with it, so it's all good.

Technological Wonders also enables a fun trick: I have a permanent caster level of eight for most things (ten for Spheres), and Spheres of Power has an adaptation section allowing for paying for class features and feats that cost spell slots with spell points… of which I have an unlimited supply. Combined with Fabricate Tech from the Technomancer and the now permanent nonmagical technological items I can get for free have some very interesting options. It can't do weapons, armor, magic, or hybrid items, and I'm limited to my permanent caster level of eight. That's OK. The Portable Grinder is a third level item, and basically turns gear into a tenth of its value in a variant form of UPB… and I get unlimited free gear. So I can turn an arbitrary set of items into any arbitrary set of items I qualify to make. Now, that would limit me to second level items… but with Spheres of Power and the Conjuration sphere, I can tailor minions to spec up to a particular hit die limit… which thanks to caster level shenanigans, means I can crank out eighth level gear. It's pretty good stuff.

…and it turns out that eighth level heavy armor protects better than what I'm currently getting from from Junk Armor spell, and can take upgrades to boot, so I go with some Vesk Overplate II: For upgrades, I go with the Quicksuit for getting in and out quickly, Reflective Reinforcement for a little DR, and a Computer Interface (it's a full Starfinder computer installed in armor… which I have my minion upgrade to the limit, of course) mostly for the novelty of having my own voice assistant. I get a pair of weapons to match the armor (a Floe Ice Launcher for ranged and an Agrarian Skitterstaff for melee), but I don't actually plan to use them: A single talent invested in the Destruction sphere is better in all ways for me.

Of course, as soon as Frank sees me making gear from nothing, everyone wants some. It's basically free, so I go ahead and hook them all up with eighth level gear of their choosing. I mean, why not?

After I get the buffing done, I switch my Spheres talents out for a bunch of Conjuration Companions - I keep the Destruction sphere tied to an area blast, along with Fallen Fey and Share Link, but end up with seven minions on tap.

I'm curious how the “Personal Starship” talent from the Pilot Sphere (which I don't plan on using in character scale combat, so yes, I'm going with the scale notes) will manifest….

How does it?
