Does he take them?
Sure. Why not?
Shrugging, William plucked each bill in turn, stuffing them deep in his pocket without a second thought. That is, until a loud ringing emanated from the giant installation, suddenly powered up and echoing through the empty building. "Shit!" he hissed, looking for some plug to pull or switch to flip, but this box was practically sprouted from the tiles, with no sign of a seam or wiring, besides the flashing bulbs and blaring horn. A stern display read: "Unauthorized removal of payment! Return stolen goods and face repercussions..."
"...or face repercussions." William repeated aloud, even their security system was styled in some fantasy magic BS. This definitely wasn't worth it. As he reached to return the bills to what must be an incredibly sensitive pressure plate, it suddenly swung shut, locking once more. The sound only grew louder as the machine surely alerted something to his crime. "Fucking dammit!" This was turning into the biggest bad bet of his career. He'd be lucky to hit one of his planned stores before cops arrived. His picking tools were still laid out at his feet, and a third run at the tumblers would be a cake walk. That was, until a large countdown flashed on all vertical walls of the cube.
:10 Okay so is that seconds or :09 Yes it was. Shit ok this :08 will just have to be his quickest :07 pick yet. He fumbled with :06 his tension bar before losing his :05 grip. As the piece bounced :04 away, He took the only :03 alternative he could think of, :02 and crammed the bills :01 into the machine.
Silence, drowned out by the hum of the incandescent bulbs blinking above him. :01 William finally exhaled, falling back from his squat to rest on his rear in grateful shock. His heart was racing like he defused a bomb, all over some cheesy anti-theft measures. He stowed his picking tools roughly, annoyed that he wasted so much time with a fake wish granting machine. He took a steady, full breath to center himself as he stood up, noting the genie was right up against the glass, had she been that close before? Maybe her servos turned on with the alarm. William focused. If the sound had attracted tonight's guard, he would have come by now, but the guy on this shift liked to sleep in the cam room, a fact William knew would help with tonight's take two on the hit. He felt confident enough to still take his score. It was a matter of principle at this point.
"Make your wishes!" Boomed a powerful, deep voice. William jumped out of his skin when the machine roared to life again, displaying 3/3 on the glass just above his head. This shitty piece of junk ahd accepted the stolen bills with the same slot that purchased a wish, queueing up a noisy round of wishing for the thief. "MAKE YOUR WISHES!" The voice bellowed again, even louder from unseen speakers in the machine. Now he had to shut this thing up before the lazy guard finally stirs.
