Chapter 10
by Manbear
Does she make the attempt?
Sure, why stop now?
Deliberately slowing her actions Samantha carefully stretches upward and outward her fingers straining to find purchase in the tiny cracks and dents in the overhang. If she had been any shorter she probably would have had to give up, but by stretching her flexible frame to its full length her fingers reach the ridged neck of the closest gargoyle.
Samantha sighs in relief when she feels the solid statuary. The head is as firm as a tree limb and she lets her feet leave their tenuous hold on the wall and swing freely into the air. For just an instant the old Sam considers the foolhardiness of hanging like this fifty feet above the grassy slope beneath her but before she loses her confidence she lets her body take over and with the grace of a gymnast (but certainly not the flat chest of one) she swings her feet onto one of the nearby reptilian heads and pushes up to the window sill above her.
Looking through the clear glass window carefully in case there were occupants inside she makes out an unoccupied circular bed chamber. A huge bed dominates the far side of the room and a desk and wardrobe were also clearly visible in the daylight let in through the many windows. In the center of the room a wrought iron staircase leads upward to an access hatch to the battlements above. After climbing this far, there was no way she was leaving until she had an opportunity to investigate the room and its contents.
The glass of the windows feels unnaturally thick and as far as Samantha can tell none of the windows opened; however once she stands on the window ledge it is easy enough to reach the rim above the oversized windows and from there climb up the last few feet to the roof is trivial. Only when she gazes back down at the ground far below her does the enormity of what she just did strike her. Her knees buckle slightly as a wave of vertigo makes her tremble. Had she lost her mind?!! A fall from this height could have been fatal; she had literally risked life and limb, yet as she made the climb her normally cautious nature was completely forgotten.
Samantha takes a dozen deep breaths gradually calming her nerves over the next minute. Only when her trembling knees once again feel firm does she move to the hatchway that leads to the room below.
"It is probably locked." Samantha mutters as she approaches to the hatch and eyes the brass ring that will lift the hatch at her feet.
Is it locked?
