Chapter 10

What's next?
Suprises around every turn
Joey had never hated the walk from the back room to the front more.
Not because of the work.
Because of the eyes.
People were still looking at him.
Not constantly—but enough. Quick glances. Double takes. Conversations that dipped when he got close.
And every time…
Their gaze flicked to Cassandra.
Who walked beside him like she owned the place.
“Stop checking if they’re looking,” she murmured.
“I’m not checking,” Joey whispered.
“You’re panicking.”
“I’m adapting.”
She smirked. “We’ll call it progress.”
They stepped behind the counter —
— and immediately —
“Whoa, whoa—no,” Crystal’s voice snapped from across the floor. “She can’t be back here.”
Joey froze.
“…Right,” he said quickly, turning. “Yeah, that makes sense—she can just—”
Cassandra didn’t move.
Instead, she turned her head slowly toward Crystal.
And looked at her.
Looked at her deeply
Just… looked.
Crystal opened her mouth again—
Then stopped, looking frozen for a moment.
Her expression shifted. Just slightly.
A flicker. A hesitation. Like a thought had slipped out of place.
Cassandra took a slow step forward, still holding her gaze.
“You were saying?” she asked, her voice calm, almost conversational.
Crystal blinked.
“…She can’t be back here,” she repeated—but weaker this time.
Cassandra tilted her head.
“She’s shadowing him,” she said gently. “Training. Observing workflow.”
Crystal’s brows knit together.
“Shadowing…” she echoed.
Joey glanced between them, heart pounding.
“She’s here to evaluate efficiency,” Cassandra continued, her tone smooth, almost helpful. “You approved it earlier.”
A pause.
Crystal’s posture shifted.
Confusion gave way to something else—certainty, settling into place like it had always been there.
“…Right,” she said slowly. “Yeah. I did.”
Joey blinked. You absolutely did not! He thought.
“She’s shadowing you,” Crystal said, now sounding completely convinced. “Corporate observation. I signed off on it this morning.”
Cassandra’s lips curved ever so slightly.
“Of course you did,” she said.
Crystal nodded once, turning away like the matter was settled. “Just… don’t get in the way of operations.”
Joey stood there.
“…Okay,” he said, because what else could he say?
As Crystal walked off, Cassandra leaned slightly toward him.
“Minimal effort,” she murmured. “People are very good at believing things that sound official.”
Joey exhaled slowly. “That is… terrifying.”
“And useful.”
They moved further behind the counter.
Mark leaned over again. “Dude, what is happening today?” he whispered.
“No idea,” Joey said honestly.
“Yeah,” Mark muttered. “That checks out.”
Joey finished the difficult work of cleaning the grease trap, he stood up starting to head towards the front when he heard
“Joey!”
Crystal again.
But different now.
Less sharp.
More… focused.
She leaned casually against the counter as he approached—but her attention wasn’t just on him.
It flicked to Cassandra.
Then back.
“You’re done already?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Joey said. “With help. Like it’s supposed to be.”
A beat.
Crystal held his gaze.
“…Good,” she said, pushing off the counter. “Follow me.”
Joey blinked. “Uh—why?”
“Go,” Cassandra murmured.
He followed.
Crystal led him toward the small office in the back, stepping inside and waiting.
Joey hesitated at the doorway.
“…This is where I get fired, isn’t it?” he muttered.
“Confidence,” Cassandra whispered.
Right.
He stepped in, Cassandra right behind him.
Crystal started to say something but locked eyes with Cassandra then her gaze getting distant continued like she no longer saw Cassandra.
Crystal closed the door behind them.
Joey’s brain immediately went into overdrive.
Okay. Small room. Closed door. Manager acting weird. This is either very bad… or somehow worse.
Cassandra leaned casually against the wall, watching.
Crystal turned to him.
“You’ve been different today,” she said.
Joey shrugged. “Just doing my job.”
“That’s not it.”
She stepped closer.
“You pushed back,” she said. “You don’t do that.”
Joey held her gaze.
“Maybe I should have been,” he said.
A pause.
Something flickered across her face.
Not anger.
Interest.
Cassandra’s eyes sharpened slightly.
There it is.
“You’re not worried about getting in trouble?” Crystal asked, her voice quieter now.
Joey swallowed.
“…No.”
It came out steadier than he expected.
Crystal exhaled slowly.
Her posture shifted—subtle, but unmistakable.
Less rigid.
Less guarded.
“…Good,” she said.
Joey blinked. “…Good?”
Cassandra almost smiled.
Crystal stepped closer.
Close enough now that Joey had to consciously stay still.
“You should’ve corrected me sooner,” she said. Her finger ran from his collar down to his chest where it rested there.
Joey’s brain stalled again.
“…I—what?”
“You let things slide,” she said. “Most people do.” A faint smirk. “It’s boring.”
Joey looked like he’d just stepped into a conversation he didn’t understand.
“I didn’t realize this was… something you cared about.”
Cassandra, in the corner, was very clearly enjoying this now.
Crystal tilted her head slightly.
“Just don’t get carried away,” she said. “You still work for me.”
“Of course,” Joey said—too quickly.
Cassandra sighed softly.
We’ll fix that.
Crystal moved past him, opening the door.
But as she did—
Her hand moved from his chest to lightly brush against his arm.
Deliberate.
Then she was gone.
Joey stood there.
“…What just happened?” he asked.
Cassandra pushed off the wall, walking toward him.
Her smile was sharper now.
“Oh, Joey,” she said. “You just discovered something very useful.”
“I discovered I’m confused.”
“That too.”
She stopped in front of him.
“Your manager doesn’t just like control,” she said.
“No kidding.”
“She likes losing it,” Cassandra added.
Joey stared.
“…I’m sorry, what?”
Cassandra’s smile widened.
“She enjoys being challenged,” she said. “Put in her place—carefully. It excites her.”
Joey blinked.
“…That feels like dangerous information.”
“It is,” Cassandra said. “Which is why you won’t misuse it.”
“I wasn’t planning to use it at all.”
“We’ll see.”
She leaned in slightly.
“For now,” she said, “you just keep doing what you did.”
“Standing up for myself?”
“Yes.”
A beat.
“And watching what happens.”
Joey exhaled.
“…This is a weird day.”
“It’s going to get weirder,” Cassandra said lightly.
She turned toward the door.
“Come on,” she added. “Your training isn’t over.”
Joey followed—
Still confused.
Still slightly terrified.
But walking just a little straighter than before.
