What do you examine first?
Study the central marble archway
You step closer to the marble archway, drawn by the inscription. Your fingers trace the chiseled letters as you mouth the ancient word: "Willing." The stone is smooth beneath your touch, almost warm, and you feel the faintest pulse of energy thrumming through it—not threatening, but unmistakably present.
Your years of research into the temple's history surface in your mind. The cult that built this place worshipped the concept of transformation through acceptance rather than ****. Their philosophy held that true change could only occur when the subject embraced it willingly. You recall passages from the fragmentary texts you studied: "The supplicant who enters with open heart shall find revelation; resistance breeds only suffering."
The inscription takes on new meaning as you examine the archway more closely. Unlike the other doors with their explicit imagery, this one is stark, simple. No warnings, no promises—just that single word. It's a test of sorts, you realize, but not one of strength or cunning. It asks something more fundamental: are you willing to proceed on the dungeon's terms?
You crouch down and examine the threshold. There's a faint shimmer in the air just beyond the archway, barely visible unless you know to look for it. Your scholarly instincts recognize it as a ward of some kind—not aggressive magic, but selective. A filter rather than a barrier. You pull one of your journals from your satchel and flip through your notes on protective enchantments. Several passages describe similar wards used in ancient temples: barriers that read intent, that distinguished between those who came in humility versus those who came in arrogance.
But there's something else. As you study the shimmer more carefully, you notice how it seems to react to your presence, rippling slightly as you move your hand near it. The pattern reminds you of something—a reference in one of the more esoteric texts about "barriers of honesty" that required supplicants to present themselves without pretense. You remember the author's flowery language: "To pass through truth, one must shed the armor of lies."
The implication settles over you like cold water. This barrier likely requires some form of vulnerability to pass—metaphorical or perhaps quite literal. The cult's philosophy emphasized authenticity, the stripping away of false personas. Given the dungeon's nature, you suspect the requirement might be rather more physical than metaphorical.
You stand back up, cleaning your glasses as you process the information. The archway offers passage to those willing to meet its terms, whatever those might be. No tricks, no deceptions—just a straightforward exchange. Vulnerability for progress. Your research suggested the cult valued such bargains, viewing them as the foundation of genuine transformation.
The magic thrums steadily, patient, waiting. Unlike the serpentine promises of the left door or the submissive imagery of the right, this pathway offers only honesty: present yourself as you truly are, and pass through.
Do you investigate it?
