A friend pulls Miles into a pickup game at a court across town, the kind of place where nobody knows your name and nobody cares what school you go to. The standard is higher than he expected and for the first quarter he is playing catch up, reading the tempo, figuring out who to watch. Then something clicks. He starts making the right passes at the right moments, hits a couple of shots that quiet the court for half a second before the game moves on, and by the end he has earned the kind of nod from strangers that means more than it should. He drives home buzzing, already behind on two things he was supposed to handle today, but feeling like a different version of himself than the one who showed up this morning.
