When you get back, you see your mom standing behind Abbie massaging her shoulders. She leans over to say softly in her daughter’s ear. “I would love to get some time to talk with you too, sweetheart. We never seem to have time for long heart-to-hearts anymore, since you’ve been so busy with college and work.” Abbie does not look like the massage, or the way mom is talking to her is at all relaxing for her.

“Um… sure mom… Let’s do that,” she mutters.

As you put the tray down on the kitchen table, Abbie stands and grabs your arm. She tugs you out of the kitchen towards the front door. It looks like your mom is going to follow, but you motion her behind your back to stay put, and she does. You don’t think Abbie noticed. Outside the front door, Abbie hisses at you. “What are you up to, beanpole?”

You stammer out. “I just thought that someone should stick around mom for a little bit. Make sure she’s OK before we leave her alone.”

Your sister’s eyes narrow as she looks into your face. She’s always been able to tell when you are lying. You don’t know what your tell is, but she always spots it. Maybe it’s just a look of terror in your eyes when you think she’s onto you. You try to stay calm as possible.

“You’re up to something,” She states flatly.

You try to think of a plausible explanation. “OK, OK. Since she’s in such a generous mood, I was going to ask her for something… bring up getting a new gaming computer for my birthday.”

Abbie scowls and punches your arm hard. “Fuck! You dick! Mom is having some kind of breakdown, and you want her to spend money we don’t have so you can play games.” Your lie got her so angry she didn’t bother to notice that there was something else you were hiding.

You sigh in relief, but hope she reads it as resignation. “I know. You’re right. I won’t. I’ll just finish my breakfast to make her happy, then she’ll take me to school. OK?”

Abbie grits her teeth, “If you get a computer for your birthday, or even so much as a fuckin’ tamagotchi, I will **** you, fucker. Understand?”

You nod fast. “Yes! Yes! I know. I was being stupid and selfish. Sorry.”

She nods, satisfied for now. You think if she knew what you had already gotten from mom last night, she probably would have killed you right there on the front steps. She storms off to her car and drives away fast.

You head back inside. Your heart is pounding. You walk into the kitchen and your mother takes your hand and leads you to the table. “Abbie seemed upset. Is everything OK.” You sit down and shake your head. Your mother starts massaging your shoulders, her fingers kneading your muscles. “You’re much too tense for a young man, honey.” She leans over and you can feel her lips brush your ear. “I could relax you, if you like… like last night.”
