how we should approach the next step of our mission.
Stay on the ship and use our new sound system to attract a bird
I believed that the key to successful negotiations would be understanding their culture and society. But for now, I had to focus on finding a common language.
I climbed onto the deck, the sound of the waves slapping against the hull a soothing rhythm. A massive speaker sat on the deck, a message blasting from it in a dozen languages. "Greetings, inhabitants of this island. We come in peace. We wish to establish contact with your people."
I looked out at the island, waiting for a response. The minutes ticked by, the only sounds the hum of the generator and the distant squawk of unseen birds.
I leaned against the railing, scanning the shoreline with my binoculars. The island was a riot of color, from the vibrant flowers to the iridescent feathers of the birds flitting between the trees.
Suddenly, a movement caught my eye. A figure perched on a branch, watching the boat. It was a bird man, but unlike any I'd seen in the grainy security footage. This one was lean and wiry, with bright blue feathers and a crest of black and white on its head. It reminded me of a kingfisher.
I lowered the binoculars and stepped back from the railing.
This was it. The first sign of contact since our arrival. I couldn't let any nervousness or excitement show. I had to remain calm, professional.
The bird man leapt from his perch, wings spreading wide as he soared through the air. He landed on the deck with a soft thud, his wings folding back into place. He stood there, looking around the boat, his eyes taking in every detail.
"Greetings," I said, holding out a hand. "I'm Dr. Humphrey. I assume you're here to speak on behalf of your people?"
The bird man tilted his head, studying me.
His eyes were a piercing gold, like the sun reflecting off a lake. He didn't make a move to shake my hand, but I didn't take it personally. After all, the whole handshake thing was a human custom.
"I am Zephyr," he said, his voice a melodious blend of bird calls and human speech. "I have been sent to understand your intentions."
I nodded, trying to keep the excitement out of my voice. "I'm glad we can communicate. I'm here to establish peaceful relations between our peoples.
I have a proposal from my superiors that I believe will benefit both of us." I gestured to the small table and chairs set up on the deck. "Would you like to sit and discuss this further?"
Zephyr hesitated, his eyes flicking from me to the table and back again. "I am not accustomed to sitting like humans," he said, his voice a soft trill. "But I will make an exception." He perched on the edge of the chair, his wings rustling softly.
I sat down across from him, trying to ignore the fact that I was having a conversation with a bird man.
I represent a company that's interested in setting up a mutually beneficial agreement." I paused, letting the words sink in. "But first, I'd like to learn more about your culture, your society. You know, the usual diplomatic chit-chat. So, let's talk about...
So lets talk about
