Chapter 4 by Jnightshade Jnightshade

What do you suggest?

Stay on the road.

You have never been a true-dreamer but your dream was so vivid you fear it was a warning. You lobby to stay on the road. After some debate your cohorts agree.

The day proves uneventful and you cover a great distance. What troubles you though, is the closer you get to Alidor and the blighted lands, the less you are able to feel Omaraha. For you this is particularly disturbing as the goddess is both a source of peace and comfort, and the source of your healing powers.

The sun begins to set and you set up camp. After a brief dinner with your taciturn companions, you head to bed. You are uncertain whether or not you wish to have another dream. You fall asleep rather easily, but your sleep is fitful. You wake up with the sun, but you do not feel rested. You note Caramus returning from a small pond, his scowl more pronounced than usual. You walk to his side.

"Caramus, you seem troubled."

"Indeed I am priestess. I used the pond to scry and contact my guild. They informed me why they insisted I go."

"Will you share, Caramus?"

"Most of it yes. The guild is most concerned about three cursed artifacts of immense power. I was told to recover them and return them for study. One is completely unknown. The next is the brand of the Abyss, it's powers are not known, but it is of demonic origin. Lastly. And of greatest concern is The Cloak of Darkness."

"Cloak of darkness?" You ask. "I know of half a dozen of those. Thieves covet them."

"Not 'a cloak of darkness', The Cloak of Darkness, the one that all the lesser cloaks are based on. The tale of this cloak is incomplete, but what is known is the demon goddess of lust and destruction Ashkara, who once dominated these lands, desired a mortal mate. However, each human male or female she coupled with had a tendency to die from her attentions. She created the cloak to empower a human, to enable her to take one as lover. She found a great hero and gifted him with the cloak. The story gets hazy, but supposedly they coupled, but the hero saw what the demon goddess intended for the world and used the full power of the cloak to destroy her. Since then, the cloak turns up in a number of tales. The wearer always has great power, but in the end the cloak devours their soul and **** follows."

"And they want you to bring it back?"

"They think my elven heritage will protect me. Bah! Those things should be destroyed or thrown into a deep dark pit. We should head back to the group, I can hear my stomache growling."

After a brief meal, your group sets out for the Calla outpost. With each mile your contact with your goddess, the source of your power diminishes. By the time you arrive, the sun is setting and you are unsure if you could even heal a scratch.

The streets of Calla seem a bit more deserted than usual, but you could care little. You are simply happy to have a real bed and time to meditate. You follow Arielle to an inn she is familiar with. Your group heads in and secures several rooms and has a meal. As the night grows deeper, one by one your group retires to the comfortable beds of the inn. Finally, just you and Arielle are left.

Arielle speaks,"You go up to bed I need to meet my contact and find out why he hasn't been reporting. I'll be safe. Go on up, I won't be long."

The thought of a comfortable bed beckons you, but the whole reason you came was to see your friend safe. Do you go to bed as she suggests or follow her, even though with your powers essentially gone you may not be able to help.

What do you do?
