Spy on Mrs Oversight

What is going on with Mrs Oversight? Why would she still be in her office this late in the day? And who is she talking to? Male. You pick that up from what you can hear. Nothing else. No identity. You’ve met all the male teachers, and none of them appear friendly with Mrs Oversight. None of them were particularly memorable either.

A simple way of finding out is to unlock the cupboard and slip inside. Once Inside the voices become clear. Mrs Oversight and a male.

“Are you sure you’re doing that correctly?” That’s the male voice.

“You doubting me? After forty years of marriage, you still don’t trust me?”

“It’s not that. Look, I know these things are complicated, and they can backfire, if you’re not careful. I just think you should get him to do it. He’s the expert.”

“He’s no expert. You saw how it went last Friday. The protections. He made no difference. If anything, they’re fading faster. He’s no use. His interference maybe making it worse.”

“Or She’s still doing it?”

“Then find Her.”

“You know we’re looking.”

“I know, but, look we have to do this, and I’d rather he wasn’t involved. In fact, I’m with Gladys, we should replace him.”

“That’s not happening.”

“Why not?”

“We go to the Vatican and demand he’s replaced? Won’t happen. Even if they said yes, which they won’t, we can’t trust who they’ll replace him with. The position of those who support us has been weakened with every recent pope. They’re no longer in a position to influence who would replace him.”

“You mean?”

“I mean, we’re more likely to get someone who knows nothing about our history, what we and our ancestors did here, and no idea how to replace the protections. At least he knows all that.”

“You mean it’s him, or nobody?”

“At the moment, yes.”

“Well, you can tell Gladys. She won’t be happy. She’s probably overreacting, but who can blame her, after last year. She was the most blinded of all of us. And she’s seeing Her influence in everything. She’s leaping at shadows, overreacting. She was in here on Monday talking about Mr Smith, thinks he compounds the problem.”

“Does he?”

“I don’t know. You remember how it felt when we got married. Well, the protections are gone, not just for us two, for the whole school. And he… He’s male, he’s young, he’s handsome. And the girls are unfocussed. She’s talking about dismissing him, just in case.”

“Megan won’t like that. Hiring him was a favour to her.”

“Favour to her husband. Although it helped that he was the best qualified applicant. But it’s not doing any good. He still doesn’t trust us, and while he doesn’t trust us, Megan won’t.”

“Maybe if we told Megan the truth.”

“Oh, and confirm her distrust was valid? Sometimes I think you don’t think things through. You’re a clever man but you don’t know people.” A brief pause. Then. “Right, I think that’s it.”

“This will tell us if anyone’s still under Her influence?”

“That’s the idea.”

“And if it doesn’t show anyone?”

“Either I didn’t do it correctly, or no-one’s under Her influence. Which wouldn’t surprise me, because she was mainly interested in last year’s Upper Sixth and they’ve all left.”

“Kelly Golden’s still here. Could she be the spy?”

“No, She didn’t use Kelly Golden. That girl is impossible to control. And you know what her father’s like. Even She steered clear of that. No, I’m guessing this won’t find anything, but we’ve got to try.”

Once again, listening in to Mrs Oversight’s conversations gives you no insight. Why did you bother?
