Chapter 108

Spoon Thoughts
Early morning sunlight slipped through the curtains in thin golden bands, painting warm stripes across the bedroom. Roy lay perfectly still. Not because he was nervous. Quite the opposite.
The woman in his arms had settled against him sometime during the night and hadn't moved since. Elaine fit there so naturally that it felt less like sharing a bed and more like returning something to its proper place.
A slow breath filled his lungs. Her shampoo lingered in the air. Something floral. Something soft. Familiar. Comforting. Every rise and fall of her breathing brushed gently against him. Every little sleepy sigh seemed to settle deeper into his chest.
God, he loved her.

The thought arrived so naturally that it barely felt like a thought anymore. Just a fact. Roy loved Elaine. Not admired. Not appreciated. Loved. Deeply. Completely.
Maybe it was the magic. Maybe it was fate. Maybe it was something in between. At this point, Roy wasn't sure he cared.
Love was love.
The sleeping woman shifted slightly, pressing closer without waking. A smile tugged at his mouth. Last night hadn't been wild. Hadn't been chaotic. Hadn't carried the frantic energy that seemed to accompany so many of the strange twists his life had taken over the past week.
Instead, it had felt... peaceful. Like coming home.
When he'd shown up at Elaine's door, it hadn't been because he was looking for excitement. He'd simply missed her. Missed her laugh. Missed her warmth. Missed the way she looked at him as though he was the most important person in the world. The feeling had become impossible to ignore. And judging by the way she'd practically launched herself into his arms when she opened the door, the feeling had been mutual.
Roy's arm tightened slightly around her waist. The previous week still felt impossible to fully comprehend. A little over seven days ago, he'd been alone. Not lonely exactly. Just... disconnected. Relationships belonged to other people. Love belonged to other people. Those were things Roy had quietly accepted he might never experience.
Then everything changed.
Now there was Elaine. Michelle. Zara. Three women. Three loves. Three people who occupied his thoughts from the moment he woke until the moment he fell asleep. And somehow his heart made room for all of them.
The strangest part wasn't that it happened. The strangest part was how right it felt.
Roy had grown up believing relationships worked one way. One man. One woman. One future together. His parents had built a wonderful life that way.
Yet every instinct inside him now insisted that loving Elaine didn't diminish what he felt for Michelle. Loving Michelle didn't weaken what he felt for Zara. The feelings existed side by side without competing. Without cancelling one another out. Instead it simply felt true.
A sleepy murmur escaped Elaine. She shifted again, nestling back against him. Roy smiled into her hair.
The previous night had reinforced something he'd already suspected. With Elaine, there was no conflict. No uncertainty. No guilt.
Every new girlfriend brought questions. Questions about consent. Questions about the wish. Questions about whether any of this was fair. Those concerns never fully left him. Each relationship carried the weight of knowing that magic had altered lives without permission.
But Elaine...
Being with Elaine felt natural. Necessary. As though they had somehow been moving toward each other long before the wish ever existed. When he was with her, guilt vanished. So did doubt. So did any question about whether or not being with her was right.
His eyes drifted toward the ceiling.
The same certainty was beginning to form around Michelle. Around Zara. That part was harder to understand. Harder to explain. Yet it was happening all the same.
A quiet laugh escaped him. Three women. Three extraordinary women. And somehow they all loved him.
The thought still felt absurd.
Wonderful.
Terrifying.
Absurd.
A phone rested on the bedside table nearby. Sooner or later it would light up. Sooner or later there would be a message.
Breakfast.
Jessica.
Roy's smile faded slightly.
Ava's mother was smart, beautiful, charming, and funny. A woman he genuinely liked after spending only a short amount of time with her. A woman who also happened to be the mother of one of the most uncomfortable chapters of the entire wish.
How exactly was he supposed to navigate that?
Part of him wondered whether he should simply slow things down. After all, Jessica wasn't Agnes. There was no urgency to become intimate with her. No danger. No obvious reason to rush anything. Maybe spending time together without immediately trying to solve the situation was the right move. Maybe he could actually get to know her. Maybe he could figure out what he was doing for once, use the time where Jessica believed him to be her boyfriend to catch his bearings.
The idea sounded nice.
Then again, it wasn't as if he really knew where he'd start if he did have the time. Maybe the bar? Maybe back home? It wasn't as if errant reality-altering wishes were covered in his undergrad, all those years prior.
Another sleepy sound escaped Elaine.
Her hand found his where it rested against her stomach. Without opening her eyes, she intertwined their fingers. The simple gesture melted every serious thought in Roy's head. His heart squeezed.
Maybe he didn't need all the answers today. Maybe he didn't need them tomorrow either. For the moment, everything was perfect.
Sunlight.
Warm bed.
The woman he loved sleeping peacefully in his arms.
Questions could wait. Magic could wait. Breakfast could wait. The future could wait.
Roy closed his eyes and held Elaine a little closer.
For a few precious minutes, that was enough.
