Chapter 35 by telaviv telaviv telaviv telaviv

She could only hope the police would be able to override this mad AI tomorrow.

Spoilers: They are able to.

Things happened quickly the next day. Samantha woke up to the sun shining in through a large window, stretched, and put a hand to her neck to make sure the shock collar was really gone.

When she felt nothing but her own skin, her face broke out in a smile as bright as the sun and she got up. After putting yesterday's wrap dress on again, she left the bedroom and went to the shared part of the suite. Tom and Pete had ordered room service for breakfast, so she joined them with a chipper "Good morning!" and sat down.

A glance at the clock revealed that it was just after nine, and sure enough a few minutes later the resort AI announced that the police had arrived. The two cops in question, a pair of young officers who introduced themselves as Officers Hernandez and Rebecca, were initially confused as to why the AI had sent them up here, and then annoyed about the false report. But as Samantha, her voice shaky, explained what had really happened their annoyance turned into outrage at Tiffany.

Hernandez went downstairs to take Tiffany into custody, while Rebecca stayed to finish taking everyone's statements. Once she had heard everything, she excused herself to the hallway to make a call. After a rather animate conversation with the chief of police, she came back in and gave Samantha a compassionate smile. "I just got the override code from my chief. Premiere AI, data access one one alfa seven cue. Delete all records of Samantha Smith from your system. Add a new guest entry for Samantha Smith, American tourist, staying in- What room number should I give it?"

"311," Samantha supplied, and Rebecca repeated it.

There was no answer from the AI, then... "Processing. Processing. Ding! Welcome, guest Samantha Smith. You are in the wrong room."

"I'm... I'm visiting my friends," Samantha said, her eyes widening as she turned back to Rebecca. "Is that really it? It's over?"

Rebecca looked thoughtful. "Not entirely. You said the airline had you registered as a pet too, and who knows how that might have propagated from its system. We'll have to call your government so they can trace and correct your information, but since your passport is missing you'll have to stay here for a while anyway. By the time the embassy has new papers for you, everything should be cleared up and you can get a flight home as a person."

"And my sister?"

"She won't bother you again. Even if she got out, and I assure you she won't, she can't come back to the resort without security coming after her again. You just stay here and try to enjoy the rest of your vacation, ok?"

"I'll try," Samantha nodded. "Thank you so much. You too guys, you're real life-savers."

"Cheers to that," Pete grinned while raising his glass.

And that's how Samantha regained her humanity.
