Chapter 6 by TungstenFD TungstenFD

Who do you meet at orientation?

Spinel

You notice a bright pink person who has dark streaks like running mascara under her eyes and a strange sort of clown-jester type of outfit, with a huge inverted heart-shaped gemstone in the middle of her chest. They remind you of what you heard about a couple of little towns on the east coast of the US where strange, colorful gem people hang out, though you're not 100% sure if that's even real. Despite her sort of edgy look, she looks like she likes the look of this place. You feel it's rude to stare and not at least say hi, so at the earliest opportunity, you lean over and whisper.

"Hey, I just wanna say you look really cool."

The strange person looks over quickly with a deer-in-the-headlights stare, but quickly recovers. "Aw, thanks." She extends a hand toward you. "You're not so dull-lookin' yourself. The name's Spinel."

You take her hand and shake it, smiling. "Jean."

A faculty member calls for everyone's attention, and they start something on the screen. It's a cartoon, with fun animal characters in diapers and babyish outfits. The show goes on about the things you already guessed, but it isn't any less interesting to see it in cartoon form while sitting in an oversized playroom. The characters chat and dance about the screen, talking about how fun and relaxing it is to act like a baby, and you're enthralled.

Giddy excitement renews in you at the realization that you're really here, and all your adult baby dreams can come true. Here, where using diapers is encouraged, and every lesson is taught in a fun and babyish way, you'll be well taken care of, the next four years(and maybe even more) look bright.

The person you just met, Spinel, chuckles under her breath at one of the characters, a dalmatian, boasting that he'd already prepared by starting to wear diapers ahead of time and another being sad that they didn't. You find it pretty funny as well, so you laugh a little as well. Your body is becoming restless at the thought of wearing diapers for the first time in forever.

Then, the orientation becomes a drawing and coloring activity, where basic rules about plagiarism and academic integrity are told by the instructor, and everyone follows along by drawing funny faces corresponding to whether something is a good idea or a bad idea, and coloring in pictures of people doing the things discussed in the lesson as the instructor talks.

Orientation eventually ends, with the final statement to everyone being "Fun and relaxation are important for health, and good health means good grades."

When it's over, Spinel turns to you. "So, are you staying on campus, too? I'm about to head to my dorm, wherever that's supposed to be," She chuckles.

"Oh, yeah I'm in Clayton 107 I think?" You answer. "What about you?"

Spinel gapes at you, before giving a dramatic gasp. "THAT'S WHERE I'M STAYING!"

She bounces around in a way that definitely isn't normal, and when she stops, she seems to deflate at your expression. "O-oh, yeah I'm uh..." She fumbles with her words, before stating a simple "sorry," her wild twintails visibly drooping.

"Oh, no I was just caught off-guard. I think I've heard of people like you on the east coast?" You try to wave away her dejected look. "Gem people? What's the deal with that?"

Spinel takes a deep breath, steadying herself. "Okay, so yeah. Us gems aren't exactly uh..." She continues fidgeting, stimming possibly, with her hands. "...From Earth? Or organic. All this—" She extends her noodly arms to gesture to her whole body at once, "—is made of light. Except for this." She points to the large, gleaming gem in her chest.

A little less disturbed, and a little more enamored, you nod along. "Cool! Well, I hope we're a good fit as roomates, you seem really cool, and I've never really met any kind of being like a gem before."

Spinel's expression is a little odd, but then she smiles back and laughs. "I hope so, too. It'd be really awkward to live with someone you don't even like."

You chat with Spinel as you walk together to your new dorm, when Spinel suddenly asks. "So when are ya putting a diaper on? It doesn't look like you've got one on."

Despite the sense of a lack of social awareness you get from her question, you're not all that fazed. "As soon as I get to the dorm, probably. The only thing that's been keeping me from trying them out sooner is my parents."

Spinel seems to understand, and begins recounting her story. "See, gems don't exactly need to eat, but we can have a digestive system if we want to. I've been curious about diapers for a bit though, but it's hard to get regular ones made for humans to fit well since my body is so stretchy, so some other gems back at Little Homeworld decided to make some special for me, and a little thingamajig to clean 'em up so I don't run out."

Her smile is bright as she talks, and you think you understand why she'd want to be here. "That's so nice of them," You respond, fiddling with the keycard in your hand. When you reach your shared room, you open it up to see something between what you'd expect of a college dorm and a nursery.

You and Spinel look all around, taking in the colorful sight. Beyond the small kitchenette lies a comfy room with two round desks by the window, two beds with side-railing like you'd put on a toddler's bed to keep them from falling out in the night, a couch, and an adult-sized changing table.

What do you do first?
