You are Sophie, the daughter of the tavern-keeper, Thomas. You work in the tavern your father owns in the small market town of Furleigh as you have ever since you were a little girl. Of your mother, you don't know, and no-one seems to want to tell you anything about her when you ask so these days you don't.

Your life is pretty good though; you have a roof over your head, three square meals a day, and a proper bed to sleep in, which is more than many can lay claim to these days. Or at least it would be, if it wasn't for Violet, the miller's daughter. A stuck-up bitch with a mean streak as broad as her rotund father's belt, she has made it her mission to make your life miserable. It started as name-calling or taunts about your mother but over the years, as you blossomed into a young woman, has escalated to cruel pranks, spiteful gossiping and on the worst days, outright .
