Something unpredictable.

Andrew staggered forward and collapsed onto the couch. He stared at Pat with wet eyes and she frowned.

"Hey, are you ok? You look really bad." She turned to Ross. "Should we get him to a hospital?"

"What... the fuck?" Andrew rasped. "What the fuck happened down here?"

Ross put his fingers to Pat's forehead. She smiled and said goodbye before collapsing back into the chair like a ragdoll. Andrew took a moment to respond.

"Wait, she was a golem all along?" he asked. "How- what-"

"She used a release tablet on herself," Ross said quietly. "Why would she do that?"

"She tried to fucking kill me!" Andrew's shock had worn off and his mind was flooded with anger. "She seduced me and she brought me here and she- oh God, she was gonna make that thing kill me!"

"We need Madison back," Ross muttered. "We need to figure out who or what Pat is."

As Andrew stared as his shaking hands and wept with rage and terror, Ross knelt beside his inert girlfriend. He performed the ritual as always but fell backwards in shock when Madison shot bolt upright and screamed. Her eyes bulged impossibly out of her head and she stared at him. For a fraction of a second Ross gazed into her artificial eyes and saw nothing but wild uncomprehending madness.

Then Madison was back, and she was in his arms, and she was crying.
