Something Stranger

A shattering silence fills the room. The collar has returned to it's usual glow. The stillness feels fake. Like the moment before a hammer drops. Then the hammer drops. Joy's eyes shoot open again. They remain completely white. Completely empty. You call out her name, but don't get a response. Whatever is happening, Joy isn't behind those eyes.

With robotic precision, she rises from the ground and takes up a kneeling posture. Her wrists cross behind her back, her legs spread subserviently, and her head hangs low and subservient. Every element of the pose is perfect. Not an inch of her balance is off. You drop slightly to look in her eyes. While you do, you notice that something has appeared on the collar. Something that wasn't there before. A small metal place on the ring, like a dog's tag.

"Are you my owner?" Joy asks. Or at least, Joy's body asks. the voice that asks the question is distorted. Almost static filled. It is entirely devoid of emotion or humanity.

"Huh?" Is all you can say in response.

"I must have an owner." It says, keeping the same inhuman tone. "Are you my owner?"

You pause. What are you supposed to say to that? This can't all be a joke anymore. What would happen to your wife if you agreed? What would happen to your wife if you didn't agree? Your leg shakes uncontrollably. Her voice, her perfect face. it's all flat. Empty.

You reach out and once more try to remove the collar to no avail. Every few seconds she asks the question again. Are you her owner? Are you her owner? Are you her owner? You try to move her, but she just forces herself back into the exact same posture. There doesn't appear to be a way out of this besides answering the question.

"Are you my owner?" The voice asks.
