Chapter 4 by SG SG

Aww, they're all grown up.

Some more than others.

Ross, Madison, Maria, and Andrew settled into comfy chairs around a small coffee table in a tastefully furnished room while the concierges sat on a nearby sofa and chatted quietly. After describing their orders to a beautiful golem with a Mediterranean complexion and intense brown eyes, the group resumed their conversation. Andrew was finally starting to get his bearings, and he was intensely curious about the estate.

"Are there any humans here, or is it all golems?" he asked.

"You two are the only meat people here," Madison said. "This place is basically a small golem city."

"A utopia," Maria remarked wryly. Andrew ignored her, still brimming with questions.

"And your mom built this place?"

Madison waved her hand dismissively. "Golems built this place. My mom just gave them the orders. Anyway, Ross and I have made some changes since we took over."

"Madison's mom had some strong opinions about golems," Ross said.

"She fucking hates us," Madison interjected bitterly. Ross cleared his throat and continued.

"Obviously, Mads and I feel differently. When Mrs. Hill was in charge, the golems were as dehumanized as possible. She wouldn't give them names or even clothes, and had them walking around like robots. It was honestly a little creepy."

Maria leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. She gestured to the three golems on the couch, still engaged in light banter. "Is that why those three are over there having a conversation? I wondered about that."

Madison nodded and spoke with a hint of pride. "That's right. I spent half of last summer working out a way to make this place feel a little more real. The logic to evolve personalities was already written for the concierges, so I just had the R&D team modify it and apply it across the board."

"How did you modify it?" Maria asked. In response, Madison turned and called Ross's concierges over. They paused their conversation temporarily and approached her. She addressed Jane.

"Hey Jane, how've you been?" she asked nonchalantly. The golem offered a bored shrug.

"I don't know. Fine, I guess. Is that all you wanted? You interrupted us to ask me how I've been? You know you could just check the schedules, right?"

Maria understood immediately. "The concierges have a wider set of traits they can develop. Jane can be bitchy because she interfaces directly with Ross, and he might like that-"

"Hey, fuck you," Jane said with mild irritation.

"Exactly. You wouldn't want your golem townspeople getting into fights or developing grudges, so you keep them on a shorter leash. Is that right?"

"Pretty much," Ross said. He dismissed the concierges and they returned to the couch. "The concierge logic creates personalities based on their dynamics with a human being. I think it's kind of fun to have a golem with a bad attitude, so that's what Jane became. To create this little golem community, we seeded a few golems with personalities and let the rest coalesce around them."

"Incredible," Maria said. "How many golems do you have here?"

"Somewhere between six and eight thousand," Madison answered. She took a sip of her wine. "The number fluctuates based on demand. For example, if Ross decided he wanted to play the violin, we might spin up a luthier shop. If we wanted to add a new wing to the house, we'd make a few architects and then put together a construction crew."

"This is fucking crazy," Andrew said. "You've got a small army of golems at your disposal and you have them brewing beer and dancing in the woods?"

Ross looked at him evenly. "What would you do?"

That's a really good question.
