Though it has been a perfect day for the two teenage lovers, it was not to last, they couldn't keep their relationship a secret and Anna's lunatic mother has her shipped to 'Camp Isipaquaxet' which specializes in 'Curing' lesbianism. She comes back at 20 'cured' repudiates Jean publicly, and the two do not see each other or speak again until they are 27...

Tragedies like this happen all the time IRL because of the prejudice and ignorance of those who think being homosexual is a 'choice': It's not, no more than being Black, White, or Asian is, you are born with the hard wiring for it, or not.

I know, not because I am homosexual, the opposite in fact: I WANTED to be 'Bi' but found to my disappointment that I cannot 'perform' for anyone but women: just not wired that way.

However, that is not really the 'end' of the story, just the beginning of a new chapter, because about 7 years later, fate throws Jean and Anna together again, thousands of miles from the mountain town of their childhoods and first day of love, and with their parents and families out of the picture...
