"So what was that" you asked
"oh mother wanted me to talk to her once I settled in" said Emily "something about wanting to hear about how the house is"
"Oh that's good" For a moment there was a pause and you considered what to talk about. One idea came to mind "Say, cousin when we were younger you used to stare at me so often, why was that?"
Emily stopped eating, her eyes scurried the room "Um, well... I... "
"Nevermind.... If it's too hard to answer. So how was school?"
"Good. I'm looking to study chemistry maybe you could help me?"

The rest of lunch was a little quiet. However, it was less awkward
