Chapter 25 by Wyrda Wyrda

Will you do anything while you wait? Or will you stay focused?

Sit tight and stay focused.

You watch as darkness falls across the land like an austere gargoyle. Keeping your eyes fixed on the camp, your sharp, elven eyes able to see better and farther in the darkness than those silly humans. Regarding the camp like an eagle watching a fresh rabbit, you observe the activity of the camp slowly subside. One by one, men go back to their tents. The guard leaves his post, going out of sight behind a tent next to the entrance for a moment before retiring presumably to sleep. A man doesn't replace him, which makes you raise your eyebrows. However, a man exits a tent soon after and slowly starts walking around the camp. By the time he's completed his third revolution, you realise that he's on lookout. The realisation makes you wrinkle your pretty face and want to spit a curse. But that would be naughty.

Eventually, it reaches witching hour. The moon hangs in the sky, muted and dull, leaving no light for the realms of men, as if covered by a wool cloth. It won't get any darker than this. Now is the time to move. You slink out from your hiding place and slowly approach the camp, keeping lower and lower to the ground the closer you get to it. Before leaving, you had taken care to cushion the noisiest parts of your armour with pieces of cloth. It may not look as powerful and resplendent anymore, but at least it won't clang together as if you're walking into the camp armed with 40 pots and pans of various sizes. You can see that there are a few torches lit across the camp. There are a couple outside each tent entrance, and a few lining the camp's outer walls. You need to be careful.

After creeping forward for a good while, you hear whistling. And it's getting closer. 'The sentry'! You suddenly realise, and quickly hit the deck. Your face pressed against the soft grass, body flat against the ground, you wait. The whistling is getting closer still. And you wait. It's almost upon you! Your arm twitches, screaming at you to get up, to run, to charge him, to do _anything! _But still, you do not move. You wait. And finally, the whistling starts to fade. You breathe a long sigh of relief, and slowly raise yourself up from the ground. That was close. The whistling will make him easier to track, at least.

You shuffle forward, and eventually you lie with your back pressed firmly against the wooden palisade. You flatten yourself as best you can, hearing the sentry come around again. You stand still for a moment, and then he's gone.

Now is the time to get inside. But how? You can think of two different options.

You could go through the front gate. That seems like the option that would make the least noise, and you know there's no guard there. You could sneak in and dart behind one of the tents.

Or, you could climb over the palisade. That is the option that would make the most noise, and you'd be out in the open for the longest period of time. However, you'd be able to avoid the most obvious sightline.

Through the front gate or over the palisade? Quickly now, the watchman will come around soon...
