Chapter 2

Sore nuts
What's next?
Sid
I awaken at dusk and leave my coffin that's situated in a secret room behind a hidden door in my walk in closet. Since I don't have to hunt tonight I'm going to stay home. I grab my favorite red silk robe and enter my bedroom. Of course I don't sleep in here the bed is just for show. I sit at my vanity and do my hair and makeup while thanking the gods for modern mirrors. It used to be that I would need my familiar to do such tasks since I couldn't see my reflection. Modern mirrors however use aluminum backings instead of silver making it possible for me to see what I'm doing as I fix my hair and makeup. Hopefully that little explanation is good enough, I don't feel like repeating it.
Ah there's a knock at my bedroom door. It's my current familiar Sidney, Sid for short. "Come in Sid."
She shuffles into the room and wow is she a sight to behold. She's a chubby little woman with a balding head of dark hair that she combs over her bald spot. A pair of bifocal eyeglasses that she constantly has to readjust hang off of her nose. Her crumpled navy blue pinstripe suit looks like it's one size too small. She's been my familiar for only three months assigned to me after my last familiar died in a car accident.
"Um good evening Master" I cut her off.
"Sid I have repeatedly told you not to call me Master. My name is Tahiri not Master. I hate that kind of formality."
"Yes um yes Mas--- Tahiri. My apologies. Please understand this is my first assignment and I'm hoping you'll like me so I can be your permanent familiar."
I light a cigarette." I'm sorry too Sid I shouldn't have gotten short with you. It's just that well--- Freddie was my familiar for well over sixty years and we got to know one another very well. She was very special too me. I guess you and I just need to get used to each other. Now what's going on?"
She seems to relax a bit." I have some papers and checks I need you to sign downstairs. Also I have your laundry in the dryer and I picked up your dry cleaning. I'll have that all put away for you within the hour."
"Thanks Sid. I'll be down in a few minutes."
"Will you be going out tonight Tahiri?"
"No Sid I'll be staying home."
"Okay I'll go downstairs now and wait for you."
"See you downstairs Sid. And Sid relax your doing a good job for me and I do appreciate it."
She smiles and nods before leaving the room. As I said it's not her fault. Freddie and I were together for several decades and we had a special bond. I saw her not as a familiar but as family. What doesn't help the situation is that most vampires treat their familiars like shit. I have always tried to be better.
