Shoshana and Daniel

It was another regular end of the evening at Dr. and Mrs. Rubin's household, where Gary had practically moved in. Baby Shoshana and Baby Daniel had cribs set up in what had been Tamara's room. Tamara was probably going straight from college to med school, her father's path, especially since she did not approve of what was going on back home. Suddenly "Big Sister" Tamara hadn't softened in her vexation at suddenly having a half-brother and half-sister after twenty years as an only child, really Mom, really Dad, how could you do this to me, but she had gotten less loud about it.

"Handing over to you, Gary," Sonia said. "You really did turn out to be a stand-up guy about the baby thing."

"Instead of just your boy-toy?" Gary said. "Shoshana's my daughter too. My mom, Bernie, and Joyce wouldn't let me forget. And Daniel is Bernie's as much as she's Dr. Rubin's, so I'm showing up for Bernie."

Gary stepped quickly to the nursery that had once been Tamara's bedroom. He scooped Daniel up from the crib and held the child close. "C'mon, kiddo, little walk, little walk."

Gary closed the nursery door most of the way, settled Daniel in his arms, and started rocking Bernie's child as he walked down the hall. He'd imagined that he and Bernie would have kids together, married, with a house, what Mom and Dad had had with himself and Lil. Maybe they would some day. But today, with Shoshana and Daniel very here, very real, and very demanding, any "someday" was far from his mind, and he'd been too much in the now to talk much about the future with his girlfriend.

Daniel was something of a double surprise. After Sonia had insisted on keeping her pregnancy to term, over Tamara's objections and Dr. Rubin's doubts, Bernie had -- very late -- noticed that not only had she missed some periods, but that something else seemed to be going on. Dr. Rubin was delighted with little Shoshana, and had settled into the new household routine with two infants and two semi-resident young lovers.
