Chapter 39 by TheSpectator TheSpectator

What actions do you take?

Shoot her and complete the contract.

Perhaps you and Delilah had something in common. You didn't really care much for the NSH race. To be honest, you might be doing this girl a favor anyway. You lock your arms and aim for the head before you squeeze off nearly empty your handgun in the process.

The first shot punches into her skull, no doubt scrambling her brain as it fails to exit. The second, third, and forth, litter the back of her head too, shattering both her skull and teeth as they tear into her. She falls, lifeless - not putting up any kind of fight. You exchange your magazine and work your way towards her. Her face is torn, mad into an ugly mess by two of the 5 bullets you put into her. The exit wounds are wider than the entry ones, but that much was to be expected.

As blood drains out from her head, it starts to pool on the floor. You step back so you don't get your boots wet. Hopefully, no one comes looking for her...Hopefully she was working on her own...You look at the door and wait for someone to come and investigate the gunshots. Once a few minutes pass, you think it safe to return to the task on hand: cleaning the body. You walk over to the body and start going through the pockets of her pants and jacket. Nothing there...

No wallet. No papers. No sign of an outside motivate. You exhale and curse. "So, you were just a fuckin' thief, uh? God damnit."

Once that is clarified, you drag the body out and set it on the ground. You return to the Sage Lodge and find Sullivan to tell him about what happened. He seems relieved and honestly cheerful that you put a stop to his thieving problem. You go outside with him to show him the body. You were almost expecting him to recognize the "uniform" the girl was wearing, but he has no reaction other than slight gasp at the sight.

"So, this was...the intruder?"

"Yeah, she picked your lock and started to go through your workbench. I thought about a more...peaceful opening, but didn't want to risk-"

"Yes, yes." He cuts you off. "Some of these, ah, creatures can be cunning. I understand your take on the situation. Better safe than sorry really."

You nod, happy to know he gets where you came from. "I suppose now would be a good time to talk about my payment?"

His eyes don't leave the body, even as he replies. "Of course. Ahem, I'll provide you breakfast in the morning and complimentary stays at the lodge, for as long as I am the owner of this establishment. As well as a 300$ fee for your work."

"That works just fine with me. I'm just glad it wasn't anything too serious. Now, I don't suspect anyone to come looking for her. I went through her belongings but didn't find anything that indicated she was coming out from either a group of people or was even with anyone." You glance at her body. "She was alone it seems, but if someone does come looking, get a hold of me or some other contractor quick. Further south these _critters _have masters, owners, and tend to have a pretty large following. I haven't seen anything like that this far north though, so you outta be good."

"I've heard of stories like that. But, I can assure you, this is just one of the few times I've seen one up close..." He joins your stare. "I know people that can't bare the sight of this hybrid-human-mutant-things, but honestly, I kinda pity them."

"Don't get emotional about the contract, Sullivan. She was stealing from you. I'm sure if she knew where I was at she'd be stealing from there...too...?" You think for a moment. For some reason, that didn't ring very true. You had always seen a mutant or two around the places coming up here. Bozeman had a couple of these NSH walking around, so did Billings during your brief stay there. It was odd that an area like where Tiny's Tavern was there wouldn't be at least one doing some kind of odd job for the town.

"What is it, Warren? What's wrong?"

"Nothing," you tell him. "I'll...I'm just remembering something. I'll be spending the rest of the night in the warehouse, but I've gotta bury the body. 12 hours from now I'll be going back where to Tiny's Tavern."

As promised, you bury the body and sleep in the warehouse for the rest of the night. You did a lazy job taking care of the blood, but you figure Sullivan would put his staff to work on that anyway. The night is silent and there are no more crazy events. It's restless, and your mind is swimming in a thousand different thoughts. You feel like you made a mistake...But why?

You fight with your thoughts all the way until you are back at Tiny's Tavern. Something felt wrong...You just weren't sure why. You see Delilah bartending, but you just return to your sleep to unload your equipment. You shower, rinsing off the sweat you gathered while hiking back.

What do you do now?
