Chapter 7 by algernonx algernonx

What's the secret?

She want to make a deal

"I know about that quill."

There's a pregnant pause before you find your voice. Fear and wonder mix in your mind. "What...what quill?"

Her smile doesn't diminish, but she shakes her head. "Don't try and lie to me, boy. The golden quill, the one you stuffed into your pocket after I killed your dragon. Not very subtle, really." She laughs and re-positions herself, lying on her back on top of you. "You've more than paid me back by leading me to this treasure, so I'll tell you a story for free." You idly stroke her hair, your head spinning from the weight of her words.

"You're not even the second to use that quill, actually. I heard that it has been around since the beginning of this world, but the first man I knew to use it was a man named Gerald Doe." You recognize the name of your grandfather. "In fact..." She pauses, reaches up to stroke your chin, and turns her head to look at you. Her smile has dimmed, and she looks wistful now. Her gaze gives you the impression of a hundred years of experience **** into only twenty of life.

"...Gerald was much like you. Too brave for his own good, but he had a certain...talent with his hands that made up for it." Your eyes shoot open, and her impish smile returns. "Smithing. He made swords here--in fact, he made mine. He traveled with me for many years, searching for a way back to his home. And then...it was like I woke up from a dream." Lita falls silent.

You rack your brain, and after a long pause, you ask her "Was it at...the tower of the Moon Eater?"

She turns back to you. "Yes, it was. How did you know?"

"My grandpa wrote a lot of stories about you. The last one was about a cult worshipping a giant snake, that was trying to bring about the end of the world. It ended on a cliffhanger, but nobody else was ever able to write a story as good as his. Not about the Red Maiden."

Lita sits up, facing away from you. "And now we're going to do the same thing. Killing mad kings, traveling the world..."
"Slaying dragons," you finish.
"Yes." She says, "But this time, I want you to promise me something--that when I stop being a hero, you'll take me back with you. To your world."

That's pretty heavy. What are you going to say to that?
