Chapter 10 by Manbear Manbear

How does this noblewoman plan to change your mind?

She tells you what she knows

"Wait." Her hands push against your chest desperately trying to create some space between the two of you. "Wait! I'll tell you. I'll tell you what I know!" As much as you were looking forward to spending your last moments in Athenapolis introducing this proud noblewoman to the joys of sex, you are more curious about what she has discovered. Stepping back, you give Lady Relia a little space and a chance to gather her thoughts. If this important news of hers turns out to be drake shit, you can always refuse to take her to the United Armies and let her renegotiate the terms for you flying her to safety.

"I've learned of a coup to take over the leadership of the United Armies and break the siege." When she sees the skepticism in your eyes Lady Relia reaches under her robes and produces a folded square of parchment. This was given to me by a representative of the High Council," she explains as she hands it to you. "It is an offer for Prince Anochises of Apollopol to break the siege of Athenapolis in exchange for the Kingship of this city."

"They put that in writing?" You snort, this must be the stupidest noblewoman in the whole city. "It's a clumsy attempt to divide the factions of the United Armies, no one will believe it, least of all the Lord Marshal."

"I'm not stupid, Rider Korban." It is almost like Relia read your mind.

"It was given to me by Haderus Galitia-"

"Who's he?" You interrupt.

"He's a nasty little man who I've spoken to at parties in passing." Lady Kirakolis makes no attempt to hide her distaste for the man. "Haderus is a perverted satyr who is a rising star in Athenapolis; he works primarily for Marcus Tendarus of the slaver's guild, and has contacts in all the High Merchant houses of Athenapolis." Relia reaches under her heavy outer robes and produces a folded piece of bleached paper.

"I discovered only discovered the real message by accident." She carries it to an oil lamp, "Come see what I mean." In spite of your initial doubts you move to her side to see what she is doing. As she holds the parchment over the open flame the script on the page darkens and becomes sharper. "I was, as you can imagine, suspicious when I was approached by this representative, but once he left I carefully pried off the seal on the letter as I'm sure they expected me to. The actual note is a insipid greetings that makes no mention of the perilous siege of the city, I have that too if you want to read it, but this is the important part." She hands you back the folded envelope. "I accidently left this covering leaning against a lamp, and when I went to reseal the letter I found the hidden writing on it. It took a while, but I was able to heat the parchment enough for complete text to appear."

"What else can you tell me about this message?" You ask after several breaths of silence.

"Nothing," she pauses for just a second "Well maybe something. Haderus knew about you and your drake, he sent me to see you and gave me the bag of gems to help pay for my escape." If this greedy noblewoman had followed this strange man's plan you would never have found this mysterious letter; you for one are not complaining, how could you not be delighted with how things turned out as you listened to your fresh captive continue. "He leered at me in a most unseemly way, and warned me that if I did not personally deliver this message to Prince Anochises' hand that I'd find myself in a very dangerous predicament." She pauses to make sure you are paying attention. "Before he left, Haderus added something about seeing me again when Anochises had finished his magic. Now that I've read the letter's post-script I have a sick feeling I know what that weasel meant."

It might still be a trap, but Lady Relia's story is starting to feel pretty solid. The language of the hidden letter only adds to its validity.

What does the real message to Prince Anochises say?
