Chapter 6 by hammerheadstories

How does the battle go?

She survives

Karlach was not what she used to be.

Whatever those illithid had done, it had made the tiefling far weaker. Her skills had regressed back to what they'd been when she was just a bodyguard! Combine that with the lower output of her infernal engine and she was a shadow of her former self. In her prime, taking care of a few false paladins would be barely an inconvenience. Now, she had to use every trick she knew to get out of it alive.

Fortunately for Karlach, her opponents went in cocky. One of them, a particularly stupid human fighter, tried to end the fight with a quick charge. Even in her weakened state, he was easily dispatched with the swing of her axe. One down, four to go.

The remaining "paladins" would prove a much more grueling fight. Anders was a particularly difficult opponent, his magic making each blow feel like ten. The fight felt like it lasted an hour (despite really being less than a minute) and left everyone bruised and battered. Karlach was able to claim one more life, one of the halfling men, before she was **** to retreat.

Overwhelmed and exhausted, the tiefling knew she had to make a break for it. Throwing the mage into Anders, she took a risk and hoped over the side of the bridge. The large barbarian tumbled down the cliffs, rocks and branches digging into her body. The water cushioned the landing a bit, though she was still sent hurtling downstream.

"Bloody hell, this is really not my day," Karlach coughed, spitting up water as she finally pulled herself onto the river bank. Covered in cuts and bruises, soaking wet, and dizzy from the parasite, the tiefling had never felt more powerless. How far she had fallen from one of Zariel's finest. Still, anything beat being in service to that devil! If she had to fight like this every day to remain free, it would still be worth her freedom.

Leaning against a rock, blood pooling beneath her, all she could do was catch her breath. She had done quite a number on those bastards. Enough damage, she hoped, to prevent them from giving chase.

Of course, only time would tell.

What happens next?
