She sets it up at a gas station

Chapter 16 by jing43

Sylvie spent the better part of the afternoon preparing with the same meticulous care she had once reserved for their anniversary dinners. She stood in front of the full-length mirror in their bedroom, turning slowly, checking every detail. The decision had settled in her like a stone she could no longer ignore. If she was going to do this for him again, she would make it count. She would make the contrast sharper, the degradation deeper, the surprise more complete.

She chose a soft champagne-colored silk blouse with a deep V-neck that framed her collarbones and the upper swell of her breasts. Over it she wore a fitted black pencil skirt that hugged her hips and ended just above the knee, the fabric smooth and expensive. Beneath, she selected a matching set of black lace lingerie—sheer bra that lifted and displayed, and a delicate thong that left almost nothing to the imagination. The lingerie was new, bought specifically for this. She slid her feet into black pointed-toe heels with a modest but elegant height, the kind that lengthened her legs and made every step deliberate. A small black leather clutch completed the look; inside she placed her phone, a compact, a few folded bills, and nothing else that could be easily lost.

Jewelry was carefully chosen: small diamond studs in her ears, a delicate gold necklace with a single pendant that rested just above the neckline of the blouse, a slim bracelet on one wrist, and, of course, the engagement ring that still caught the light with every movement of her hand. Her hair she left down in soft waves that framed her face, and her makeup was polished—subtle smoky eyes, a soft pink lip, skin glowing. When she finally stepped back from the mirror, she looked stunning. Elegant. Expensive. The kind of woman who belonged at a nice restaurant or a gallery opening, not at a run-down gas station on the edge of town.

A quiet shudder moved through her as she studied her reflection. She knew exactly what she was walking toward. The two men she had seen weeks earlier still lived in the shadows of that lot; she had driven past twice since then, confirming their presence. The thought of what she planned to offer them—what she planned to let Alex watch—made her stomach tighten with the same old revulsion. Yet she smoothed the skirt, adjusted the necklace, and forced herself to breathe. This was for him. A surprise. Something even more complete than the first time.

When Alex came home she met him at the door with a soft smile and a kiss. “I was thinking we could go for a drive tonight,” she said. “Just across town. There’s a little place I’ve been wanting to check out, but I need to stop for a soda first. I’m thirsty.”

He raised an eyebrow, already reaching for his keys, clearly pleased by the spontaneous suggestion. “Across town? Sure. You look incredible, by the way. What’s the occasion?”

“No occasion,” she answered lightly, though her pulse was already climbing. “I just felt like dressing up.”

They drove with the windows cracked, the evening air cool against her bare arms. Sylvie kept the conversation easy—work, weekend plans, a movie they had talked about seeing. Inside, her mind was elsewhere, mapping the route, calculating the timing. When the familiar gas station appeared ahead, its fluorescent lights buzzing against the darkening sky, she pointed casually.

“There. That one. Can we stop? I really want a cold soda.”

Alex turned in without question. The lot was half-empty. Near the side, just as she remembered, the two homeless men sat on their cardboard, one of them nursing a bottle, the other staring at nothing. Sylvie felt another full-body shudder as the car rolled to a stop, but she kept her expression calm.

“I’ll come in with you,” Alex said, already unbuckling.

They walked across the cracked pavement together. Sylvie’s heels clicked softly. The champagne silk of her blouse shifted with each step, the black skirt hugging her hips, the diamond studs catching the harsh station lights. She looked out of place in the best possible way—too polished, too refined for the oil-stained concrete and the flickering signs. Alex’s hand rested lightly at the small of her back as they entered the small convenience store.

Inside, the air smelled of coffee and floor cleaner. Sylvie selected a bottle of sparkling water from the refrigerated case, her manicured fingers brushing the cold plastic. Alex paid at the counter while she stood beside him, clutch held loosely in one hand. The clerk barely glanced at them. Through the wide front windows she could still see the two men outside, their figures half-swallowed by shadow.

When the transaction was finished, Alex handed her the cold bottle. They turned together and walked back toward the glass doors. Sylvie’s heart beat hard against her ribs. The surprise was almost ready. All that remained was the short walk back across the lot, the quiet word she would speak once they were outside, and the choice she had already made for the man she loved.

They stepped out of the store into the cooling night air, the soda cold in her hand, her heels steady on the pavement. The two men were still there. The evening was only beginning.
