Chapter 4 by TheSecretlyUnlikelyDuck TheSecretlyUnlikelyDuck

What now? Try to escape the city?  Or are you committed to your mission?

She runs a few yards; and suddenly trips!

Elyn thrashed for a few seconds, screaming in shock and unable to raise her left ankle from the ground. With wide eyes, the young elf looks in bewilderment past her bangs at a sticky mass of blue jelly trapping her. Flowing over her leg and foot and onto the ground, the material almost instantly sets into a thick mass. The tawny-haired girl dig her fingers into the goop to try and scrape it free, but to her horror it solidifies even more and her right hand is now trapped in the opaque light-blue mass. She tries to tug free, but her panick intensifies when she realizes it's hard like cement!

It feels as though time has slowed down; helplessly trapped in her awkward position with hand and foot together on the ground. With hide eyes she looks up at the rapidly growing clatter of scuttling surging down the alley like a wave. In those few seconds the stunned novice realizes what happened as she watches as the alien-looking monstrosities reach the last elf.

In her panic she still hadn't connected the two; the creatures and the strange slime trapping her. Before her eyes she sees the last remaining elf loose an arrow which skewers one of the insects to the wall with a nausiating crunch. As he reaches back for another, two of the monsters arch back and then forward, flexing their heads and shooting thick streams of the goo from two short tubes set between their huge globular dragonfly eyes, long rope-like antennae, and sideways parrot beak mandibles.

The elf warriors' bow hand is struck by the first glob, knocking it sideways; a second later another hits him in the sternum and knocks him over. Behind him another elf soldier has been hit on all four lims and pinned to the wall, he struggles feebily. Another elf has been pinned to the ground by several of the huge bugs' pincers and Elyn looks away.

Tugging with all her might, Elyn finally manages to pull her leg from the ground. Her heart sores for one beat ar the chance of escape until she realizes her left ankle and right hand are still suck fast together, effectively biding her. **** to get away from the inhuman terrors, she frantically tries to flop down the street.

Despite her efforts her struggling only managed to attract attention, and in an instant several of the foul bugs break away from the elf warriors. They glide with unnatural ease over the broken rubble ground on six unsettlingly spindly legs. Elyn can only scream wordlessly, frantically trying to free her trapped hand and flopping on the ground like a fish out of water. Even as she fights to save herself, the young fae woman can feel the tears pouring from her sapphire blue eyes.

She squeezes her eyes shut, willing this nightmare to disappear. When she opens them they're feet from her, and the disgust and terror causes her to freeze like a startled rabbit. Its almost like an out-of-body experience as she watches the first one approach. They're bigger than she realized, probably five feet long but only standing a little above the ground on their spread limbs. They look like a huge cross between a mantis and a june bug, their metallic looking blue-green shells glint in the dim light. She's never been so disgusted; every single feature is completely alien and repulsive, the opposite of anything elf or human.

The first one to reach her delicately strokes a finger-thinck antenna against her. She shrieks but the tastr of her skin seems to excite it, as it begins to frantically flick it's antenna against her. Elyn kicks and punches with her free limbs while sobbing her eyes out; but her soft body bounces harmlessly off hard chitin. The creature shows no apparent reaction to her fear as it slides disturbingly smoothly over her prone form.

Its legs end it bristle- covered claws, and with dispassionate precision the two elongated front legs shoot forwards and it's claws grip her. It is totally cold to the touch and there is no emotion whatsoever visible in its multifaceted lenses as it pins her down. Even as she struggles in it's grasp the insect being stays perched above her, held up by the cage of legs surrounding her. It is now excitedly rubbing its whip-live antenna all over the young healer, clacking it's horizontal mouthparts excitedly. Somehow she bites her tongue and supresses the urge to vomit.

Looking down, She instantly regrets iy as she sees the bug curl its abdomen. At the tip she sees a long, thin stinger glint in the light, beads of fluids oozing from it. She gives a final scream as it strikes forward, pushing the stinger into her thigh. Instantly the young elf feels woozy, the world spinning around her. She feels her body go slack, her muscles refusing to function and her limbs unable to struggle. Elyn watches through swimming eyes as the man sized insect sprays her with a sticky, sweet-smelling clear liquid from a gland next to the stinger. The smell is absolutely penetrating and cloyingly sweet, Elyn can feel tingling deep in her sinuses and sneezes loudly. As the liquid contacts the gel sticking her foot to the ground it instantly crumbles.

Elyn is limp, unable to resist as the insect carries her off; several of the soldiers are brought along by more of the huge invertebrates. They are carried through the ruined streets like inanimate prizes; and she was barely aware of her body as they are hauled away. After a few minutes the line of monsters carrying captives turns a corner, and Talia can see a huge yawning hole in the street. Warm, moist air blows from the hole, and light doesn't seem to penetrate in. The first worker drags an elf soldier into the abyss, and Elyn feels her stomach drop as she too is pulled toward the black pit. Whether from the venom or fainting from fear, the young healer feels merciful unconsciousness finally overcome her.

Where is she when she comes to?
