What's next?
She realizes she's going to have to do what he wants sexually
Chloe stood in the middle of the dingy living room, the light blue pencil skirt and yellow cardigan making her look like she had stepped out of a completely different world. The diamond earrings and necklace caught the weak light filtering through the heavy curtains, and her engagement ring felt suddenly heavy on her finger. Harlan’s words still hung in the air between them.
He could keep going. Noise. Property lines. Drainage. Trash cans. Whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. Each complaint would pull her father deeper into paperwork, fines, and stress. Daniel Harper was not a fighter. He would try to fix every problem, and Harlan would simply invent the next one. There was no natural end to it.
The realization settled over her like cold water. This was not a misunderstanding that kindness could fix. Harold Harlan had decided to make her father’s life difficult, and he held every advantage.
Chloe’s voice came out quieter than she intended. “What… what would it take for you to stop?”
Harlan’s small eyes flicked over her again—down the neat line of her skirt, the soft yellow of the cardigan, the delicate straps of the Mary Jane pumps. A slow, unpleasant smile spread across his face. He shifted his weight, the floorboards creaking under him, and the sour smell of stale smoke and unwashed clothes drifted closer.
“Well now,” he said, voice low and rough. “That’s a better question. Your dad doesn’t have much I want. But you…” His gaze lingered openly on the way the pencil skirt hugged her hips, then climbed to the modest neckline of her blouse beneath the cardigan. “You’re standing here all dressed up, looking like you walked out of a magazine. Pretty little thing like you could make this whole mess go away real easy.”
Chloe’s stomach tightened. She already knew what direction this was heading, but she forced herself to stay still. “I don’t understand.”
Harlan took another half-step toward her. “I think you do. You come over here a few times. Do what I tell you. Keep me happy. In return, I stop calling the city. I forget about the hedge and the noise and everything else. Your father gets left alone. Simple trade.”
The words were crude, unmistakable. Chloe felt heat rise in her cheeks—not from anything pleasant, but from the sudden, sharp understanding of what he was asking. Her mind raced through the implications. She was engaged. She loved Josh. The idea of doing anything with this man made her skin crawl. The smell of him alone was enough to turn her stomach. Yet the alternative kept looping in her head: her father answering more calls from the city, more letters, more stress, more money he didn’t have to spare.
She looked down at her hands for a moment—at the engagement ring, at the soft fabric of her skirt—then back up at Harlan. He was watching her with open expectation, certain he had already won.
Chloe’s throat felt tight. Every instinct told her to walk out, to tell her father everything, to find another way. But she knew her father. He would try to handle it himself and end up exhausted and outmatched. She had always been the one who stepped in when things got hard for the people she loved. That was who she was.
She drew a slow, careful breath. The dingy room seemed smaller than ever. “If I… if I do what you want,” she said, the words tasting wrong even as she spoke them, “you’ll leave my father alone completely? No more complaints. No more calls.”
Harlan’s smile widened, showing uneven teeth. “That’s the deal. You keep me satisfied, I keep quiet. You stop coming around or start making noise about it, and the complaints start again the same day. Clear enough?”
Chloe’s heart was beating hard against her ribs. She could still feel the weight of the diamond necklace at her throat, the neat click of her heels on the floor when she had first walked in. Everything about her appearance felt like a costume now—something polished and proper that no longer matched the situation she had walked into.
She nodded once, small and reluctant. “All right,” she said, the agreement quiet but final. “I’ll do it.”
Harlan’s eyes lit with satisfaction. The power in the room had shifted completely, and both of them knew it.
