Chapter 7
by Bookmite
What does she choose?
She likes the idea of a safe haven
"Well," she looks up at you shyly, "My name is Saria, I-I don't like the idea of being trapped, but you haven't done anything to me yet... I will accept. Also, I'm sorry about your lights. You see, my kind actually feeds off electricity, which is one reason we are thought of as pests. Sometimes it seems like I can never be full. I can feed all day, and still feel hungry."
You nod and rise to your feet, motioning for her to follow. "That actually makes me want to know about you even more, truth be told." You open the door and step inside, with the little alien following right behind you. "Please take a seat, if you wish."
She pokes around the room for a few minutes, before finally settling on one of the bean bag chairs, which she crawls up on and wiggles into. Her eyes close slightly as she lets out a soft hum. "O-Oh... I've never felt anything so comfortable. I'm so used to metal floors, this is why I imagine a cloud to feel like. Well, except for that crinkling sound, which is rather pleasant as well."
Laughing, you take a seat on one of the more normal chairs across from her. "We call them bean bags, and no they don't actually have beans in them. They were all the rage once upon a time, sad they went out of style. But anyways, you said something about eating electricity? and how have you not been caught yet?"
The little alien nods slowly, "Yes. On my planet we have giant lightning storms, and we venture out into them to feed. As for how I've managed to avoid capture, I've grown pretty familiar with vents and passageways around the station. I've always felt more at home in them than out in the open anyways, so I get around fairly easily. I pass the time feeding and watching the guests, especially during more... Intimate moments. I especially love the, what do you call it, the science wings? My people don't know how to create, so it's absolutely fascinating to watch."
"I don't know how long I've been here. The concept of time is also foreign to my kind, all we know is 'lightning' and 'no lightning'. I do have an understanding that time goes by day and night cycles, but it's not always easy to tell that when you are in darkness most of the time."
You sit and ponder over her words for a moment. While you feel she isn't lying, there's something not quite right. What was it though? This nagging feeling, like something you forgot, something you- Wait, there was something. "How am I able to talk with you? From what I understand, you shouldn't be able to, let alone be able to avoid capture so easily."
"Oh that," she looks down sadly. "I'm... Different. My people don't look up at the stars and wonder what awaits them, they cannot fathom deeper meanings, nor do are they ever curious about anything more than what is right in front of them. When I look up at the stars, I wonder where I belong. I wasn't always this way, my whole life I was like any other of my kind, collecting trinkets, only curious about when the next storm would come, and so on. Now... I no longer know."
You can't help but smile and look up towards the ceiling, "You have just described something we humans often call 'the curse of humanity'. Ever since we can remember, we've looked up at the stars, and even now we aren't sure where we belong. Every time we make a step towards finding out, it only raises more questions. In the end, perhaps we will never know, and perhaps we were never meant to know."
The only reply you hear is a muttered, "Mmhmm..." Causing you to look down, and see that Saria has laid down on the beanbag, using her front arms as a pillow, and was making sleepy noises. She was simply adorable, and you weren't about to wake her. Which leaves you with a choice.
