Chapter 24 by SkyDreamer SkyDreamer

Will the fourth stand up?

She is not standing still, she is lying in wait

While the group in the clearing was distracted, Digit quickly fluttered to the ground and ducked behind a different tree, hoping to make the party of survivors lose track of her for now.

She peered suspiciously at the scene in the clearing, sweat beading on her forehead as her brain ground its gears. What... just happened, exactly?

She thought that she'd missed the Snapdragons. Did her spell have some kind of splash effect that caused disintegration? And then there was the matter of the sparkling light and the chests appearing when they died. Was that another effect of her spell? Some separate magic from somewhere? Or did that just happen when things died around here?

It was like something out of a role-playing game... is that what this was?! Was she in one of those "sucked into a game" stories? She clutched her forehead and groaned as she realised that that might actually be a plausible theory for the weirdness that had been transpiring around her since she woke up.

Why can't this just be a bad dream? If I could just wake up in my bed right now away from all this madness, I swear I'd never bitch about "it was all a dream" story endings ever again.

The group in the clearing didn't seem to be all that fazed, they just went straight for the chests while casually bitching at each other. That lent credence to the idea that this might just be a normal occurrence around here. It also implied that this group had been around here for longer than she had, so they might be able to give her some answers... if they were inclined to do so.

She couldn't tell from their brutish hostility toward each other whether they were newly acquainted or old companions. Either way, such gruffness gave her pause to approach them. Out here in a place like this... they could very likely be some kind of bandits. They were carrying around an **** dragoness, after all. She could be a fallen companion, but there was also the possibility that she was an abductee.

There were too many unknowns. For now, she decided, she would remain hidden. If she could follow them, they might lead her to their home base if they had one. That should give her more clues about what kind of people they really were.

(Action: hide and observe)

So what will the "maybe bandits" do next?
