Chapter 8

Does Jess feel Adam's presence?

She does and she relinquishes his body

Helen and Jess had gone into the house and sat in the lounge. They had brought their glasses and the prosecco with them, and Helen had brought in the spellbook. She had been studying the book, while Jess was ostensibly trying to awaken Adam's consciousness. In truth, she was still buzzing from the experience of having sex as a man, and feeling rather tipsy from the prosecco.

"I still can't find anything that can help us," Helen complained. "Or much I can understand, really."

"That's a shame," Jess sighed. "I'm not getting any sign of Adam, either."

Helen turned from the book to look at Jess. Her gaze was thoughtful and her eyes narrowed. "Are you actually trying?"

Jess shifted uncomfortably, caught off-guard. "I, uh, well, I'm not sure how, exactly. I can't just, you know, **** it."

"I think you're not really trying," Helen said with a sly smile. "You're enjoying being in Adam's body too much."

"No, I'm not," Jess protested, blushing.

Helen raised an eyebrow. "Just admit it. You're having fun being a man, aren't you?"

Jess sighed, feeling guilty. "Maybe a little. I'm sorry."

"Don't apologise," Helen said, reaching over to squeeze her hand. "I get it. It must be pretty exciting."

Jess smiled. "It is. And not just the sex. I feel, I don't know, more confident and relaxed." She looked down at her bare torso, flexing her muscular arms. "And being a man has its perks."

Helen laughed. "I can imagine. But that's my boyfriend's body you're wearing, and I'm starting to miss him. Not that it's not nice to hang out with you, but I'd like him back."

"Of course," Jess said, feeling embarrassed. She'd been selfishly enjoying her time in Adam's body, and hadn't really considered Helen's feelings. "I will give it another try now, but...."

"But what?" Helen prompted.

"If I'm able to wake him up and give him back control, could I possess him again? You know, some time later?"

Helen's expression cracked and her smile widened. "Of course! I'm hoping we can have a lot more fun with the spellbook's magic."

Jess beamed. "Great!"

With that, she closed her eyes and concentrated. She reached out with her mind, trying to sense Adam's presence. He was still there, deep inside his own subconscious, but he felt faint, almost asleep. Jess focused her energy, trying to communicate with him.

'Adam? Can you hear me?'

There was no response. Jess tried again, this time more firmly.

'Adam, I need you to wake up.'

There was a stirring, and Jess could feel Adam's consciousness starting to emerge from the depths. She felt his presence grow stronger, and his thoughts began to fill her head.

'Where... where am I? What's happening?'

Jess could sense his confusion and disorientation. How on earth was she going to explain all this to him?

'Hi, Adam. This is going to sound a little crazy, but...'

'Who are you? What's going on? Where are you?'

'I'm, well, I'm inside your head. We both are, I guess.'

'What? Who are you?'

'Um, my name's Jess. I'm a friend of Helen's.'

'Jess? Helen's never mentioned you before.'

Jess felt a sting of hurt. 'I know, I've only recently got back in touch. She and I were friends when we were kids. Look, that's not important right now. We need to talk about what happened, and what's happening.'

'What are you talking about?'

Before Jess could reply, Helen spoke up. "You've been quiet for a while, Jess. Is everything alright?"

Jess opened her eyes and blinked, feeling disoriented. It took her a moment to re-orientate herself. "He's here. I've been talking to him."

"Oh!" Helen's expression brightened, and she put the spellbook aside. "Keep going! How is he?"

"He's, um, confused. Confused is putting it mildly, actually. I'll keep trying."

She closed her eyes and focused on Adam again.

'Were you talking to Helen just then? What's going on?' Came Adam's frantic thoughts.

'Look, calm down. There's a lot to explain, but it's going to take a while. For now, just try to stay calm, and I'll tell you what's happened.'

Jess did her best to relay the events that had transpired, explaining the spellbook, her accidental possession, and their attempts wake him. She left out the details of her sexual adventures, instead focusing on the need to return his body. She was grateful that he had no memory of what she had done as him.

'Okay, so how do I get my body back?'

'I'm not sure, to be honest. We've not found anything yet in the spellbook that can help. Helen's been trying. Maybe if you concentrate and try to take control, you can do it?'

'Right, okay, I'll try.'

Jess waited, keeping her eyes closed and focusing on the connection with Adam. She felt his presence grow stronger, becoming more dominant in his mind. She could sense his thoughts and emotions, his confusion and panic.

'Can you feel anything? Anything at all?' she asked.

'Not really,' Adam thought. 'Wait, I'm starting to feel... something.'

'What is it?'

'It's hard to describe, but I'm getting the feeling of... my body. My physical body.'

Jess's eyes snapped open, and she gasped. Her hands, or rather Adam's hands, were moving, and her body was twitching.

"Oh my god," Helen said, her voice trembling with excitement.

"He's doing it!" Jess exclaimed, the words slightly slurred as she began to lose control of her mouth. "Adam's taking back his body!"

She relaxed and allowed the transfer to continue, feeling Adam's presence becoming stronger and more dominant. His thoughts and emotions became clearer and more distinct. She could feel his shock and disbelief as he regained awareness of his body and its sensations.

"I can see! I can feel! I can move!" he cried, his voice cracking. He turned to Helen and stared at her. "I'm back. It's me, Adam."

Helen squealed in joy and clapped her hands. "It worked! You're back!" He had only been gone for half a dozen hours, but the thought of his permanent disappearance was terrifying.

Jess sighed, relieved. She could feel Adam's emotions flooding into her mind, and the intensity of his feelings startled her. She was now just a passenger in his body, no longer in control.

"Is Jess still there?" Helen asked, staring into Adam's eyes.

Before Adam could answer, he felt a shudder run through his body, and the alien presence within him faded away. A coolness suddenly filled the room, and Adam's skin prickled. Helen's eyes flicked towards the source, and a broad grin spread across her face.

"Hello, Jess," Helen said.

Jess, now a disembodied spirit, floated to the side of the sofa, her outline barely visible.

"Hey," she said sheepishly. "I'm pleased Adam's back." Her words were a little hollow, though. She wasn't sure how she felt, exactly.

"Hello Jess," Adam said, still reeling from the whole experience. "Thanks for, um, taking care of my body."

"Oh, that's okay," Jess said. "I'd better return to mine, then."

"Yes, of course," Helen said. "I'll message you tomorrow, and we can chat about using the spellbook again. If you'd like to."

"Sure, sounds good." Jess turned and drifted through the wall, leaving Helen and Adam alone.

What does Jess do now she's left Adam's body?
