"Hang on, Joey."

She spun, swinging that deadly Calculus book one more time. "Why should I. I was all set to, you know, rub your dick and everything, and you were too busy trying to get between Brianna's legs. If you weren't interested, why did you even bother promising me this morning?"

He managed to avoid the book again. He remembered being clumsy as a teen but years of martial arts training... training he'd somehow thought would impress women but never seemed to... had brought its instinctive grace with it. "Look, Joey, I messed up. I wanted to be with you and I planned to be with you and then I just sort of went with the moment and didn't think things through."

"Yeah? Is that how it's going to be with you? See if you can get some action from Joey, as long as she's the only one who'll give it to you?"

Well, yeah. That had sort of been the plan. But it was a plan that didn't take into account the fact that these were real people. Frankly, he'd been so caught up in his own problems as a teen that he hadn't noticed it at that time, either. Not that that made him unique--as far as he could tell, none of the guys thought of girls as anything but potential sex conquests.

"I'm not going to lie to you, Joey. I wish I'd met you like I promised. Maybe there's some way we can get a do-over."

She gave him a strange look. Like, maybe, do-overs weren't that common in a world before videogames. "Like you want me to meet you under the bleachers now, after all this? And still give you action. I suppose you think I owe you since I messed up your little footsie game with Brianna. Because it isn't going to work. You want to spend time with me, invite me out on a real date. And maybe, if I'm feeling really generous, I'll think about it rather than just kicking you in the nuts."

Rot thought about the single crumpled bill in his wallet. Prices were lower back in 1971 but they weren't that low. "You know, Joey, I'd like that. Give me your number and I'll call."
