Chapter 3 by TheArchitect TheArchitect

Beth's move.

She analyzes the bed.

Simple white bedsheets over a simple white mattress topper over a simple white somewhat hard mattress. The last characteristic was so unremarkable that Beth could not help but put it into full focus. And was immediately rewarded by a shred of her memory resurfacing from the bottom of the pit of oblivion.

"My mattress used to be precisely this hard! That's a more pleasurable way of bringing myself back together."

Beth looked down from the edge of the bed to inspect the folding mechanism and discovered that it was also not as simple as it looked. There was a sensor that measured the weight put on the bed.

"I assume it's gonna fold itself when I step down. And it'll look..." — the girl touched the concrete panels on the bottom side just to confirm her thoughts. — "...like it was never there. As if I'm going to want back up as soon as I'm down. Now, why would I?"

Beth's pupils shifted to the floor beneath the bed, and her hand stretched out towards it as well. The white tiles appeared to be the source of the air's coolness, as they were freezing cold to the touch.

"Huhm. Now the pieces in this corner fit. Hopefully, if I keep being the keener that I am, the maker of this puzzle will always stay one step behind."

She dropped down her legs and sat for a moment before coming up with another idea.

"You know what? I don't even have to touch that floor!"

Beth left the bed and allowed it to disappear behind the wall. The cold floor problem was completely solved anyway, as she kept the mattress topper with her to be her personal carpet in any time of need, like right now. It allowed her to decide on her next move without any pressure.

What would it be?
