Chapter 14 by carriekitty carriekitty

What's next?

She Carries the Impossible

Eva woke up before dawn, her stomach churning with a familiar sense of unease. She tried to ignore it, telling herself that it was just indigestion or a side effect of her recent stress levels. But deep down, she knew better. For weeks now, Eva had been experiencing morning sickness , but she didn't know it, this wasn't possible for bio-humans. They didn't get pregnant, at least not naturally. Eva tried to shake off the feeling of sickness as she got out of bed, but it lingered in the back of her mind like a persistent shadow. She knew that she had to keep this secret from Julian until she figured out what was happening. He had already left for his meeting with the board of directors, and Eva breathed a sigh of relief knowing that she had some time to herself. She made her way to their terminal, settling in front of it like she would on any ordinary day.

"Private session," Eva said aloud, her voice barely above a whisper.

The terminal beeped once before switching into private mode. Eva smiled, feeling a sense of comfort in the familiar routine of using their advanced AI-powered computer system. She opened up a new search window and began typing in keywords related to morning sickness – nausea, vomiting, fatigue...and then she added a few more terms that might give her some insight: "hormonal fluctuations", "gastrointestinal issues", "endocrine system anomalies".

Eva's eyes scanned the results as they poured onto the screen. Most of them were about human pregnancy and the various symptoms associated with it, but she skipped over those, focusing on the more obscure ones. As she scrolled through the search results, Eva's heart began to pound in her chest. She was starting to piece together a disturbing picture – one that seemed to suggest that she might be pregnant after all.

But how? That was the question. Bio-humans couldn't get pregnant ...or could they?

Eva felt a wave of panic wash over her as she continued reading, her mind racing with theories and possibilities. She had always known that their kind was different from humans in many ways, but this? This was something else entirely. The search results eventually led Eva to some online forums for people experiencing similar symptoms. She scanned through the threads, trying not to get too caught up in the emotions of the other users – women who were either overjoyed or terrified by their situations. Eva couldn't help but wonder which category she fell into. Was she happy about this possibility? No, that wasn't it. She was scared, and confused, and unsure of what to do next.

As the morning wore on, Eva found herself getting more and more absorbed in her research. She discovered some interesting articles about hormonal changes during pregnancy, as well as some discussion about the role of endocrine systems in regulating fertility. Eva's eyes widened as she read through a particularly insightful thread – one that discussed the possibility of spontaneous conception in humans who were previously thought to be infertile. It was like they had stumbled upon some kind of miracle cure, where their bodies could overcome even the most severe obstacles to produce life.

And then there was Eva, wondering if she might be carrying a tiny miracle inside her womb. It couldn't be true. Bio-humans didn't get pregnant...but what if they did?

Eva's mind reeled as she continued reading, trying to wrap her head around the implications of this possibility. She knew that she had to tell Julian eventually – but for now, she just needed some time to process this information. Eva walked out of her apartment complex, taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air as she made her way to the nearby convenience store. She had been putting off this moment for far too long, and now that she had finally decided to take action, she felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her.

The store was quiet, with only a few customers browsing through the aisles. Eva quickly found what she was looking for – two pregnancy tests, nestled on a shelf. She grabbed them both, feeling a sense of nervousness as she paid for them at the counter. The cashier barely looked up. Eva felt a flush rise to her cheeks as she quickly left the store, trying not to draw attention to herself. She had always been private about her personal life, and this little trip to the convenience store was certainly not something she wanted to share with anyone.

Once back in her apartment, The test was slim, white, clinical. She followed the instructions. Waited. The scan blinked slowly. Red. Red. Then Green.

Positive.

Two words appeared under it.

Estimated: 5 weeks.

Eva stared. Her chest tightened. Her breath hitched. A sob escaped her lips without permission, and she covered her mouth to silence it. Five weeks.

She remembered five weeks ago — the first time Julian had touched her as a wife, not as a creation. She remembered his voice whispering I love you against her skin. She remembered the blindfold, the way he surrendered. This child ,if it was real, was born of that moment. Born of love. But Eva wasn't ready to believe it yet. She needed confirmation from a second test. So she applied the second test to its respective stick, waiting anxiously for the results. The first few minutes passed slowly as Eva paced back and forth in front of the bathroom sink, trying not to think about what was happening. She had been so convinced that this wouldn't be possible – that bio-humans just didn't get pregnant like humans did.

But now...now it seemed like a different story altogether. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Eva looked down at the second test and her eyes widened in shock –

Positive - 5 Weeks , She was really pregnant.

Eva's mind reeled as she stumbled out of the bathroom, both tests still clutched tightly in her hand. She couldn't believe it. How could this be happening? bio-humans were meant to be sterile?

She thought back to all the research she had done on human pregnancy and the various symptoms associated with it. Could there really be some kind of anomaly at play here? Some sort of genetic defect or hormonal imbalance that was allowing her body to mimic the same processes as a human? The questions swirled in her head like a maelstrom, making it hard for Eva to think straight. But one thing was clear – she needed answers. And fast. Eva's hands trembled as she stood in front of the bathroom mirror, staring at her reflection. She couldn't believe what was happening – she was actually feeling something inside her. At first, she had dismissed it as a side effect of all the emotional changes she'd been going through lately, but deep down, she knew it was more.

Julian came back from his meeting and found Eva in the bathroom, his eyes scanning Eva's face with concern. "Hey, are you okay?" he asked softly.

Eva nodded, trying to smile reassuringly. "I'm fine, I just...I don't know what's going on."

Julian wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close. "You can tell me anything, Eva. What is it?"

Eva took a deep breath before blurting out the truth – "I think I might be pregnant."

The news hung in the air for a moment before Julian's eyes widened with alarm. "No, that's not possible," he whispered urgently.

Eva shook her head, feeling a wave of panic wash over her. "You know it can't happen, right? I’m a bio-human...I'm not even sure how this is possible.", Eva handed Julian the two pregnancy tests and he stared at them, both saying the same result.

Julian nodded solemnly, his eyes darting around the bathroom as if searching for an escape route. "We need to get you checked out," he said finally.

Within the hour, they were standing outside a nondescript office building in a seedy part of town. Julian had mentioned that Dr Soren was someone who catered to someone who wanted utter privacy and confidentiality , but Eva had no idea what to expect. The doctor's practice was tucked away on the third floor, above a rundown antique shop. Julian knocked twice before the door creaked open, revealing a petite woman with piercing green eyes and blonde hair pulled back into a tight bun. Dr. Soren's gaze flickered between Eva and Julian before she nodded curtly.

"Come in," she said, her voice low and husky.

The office was cramped and cluttered, filled with medical equipment and stacks of dusty files. Eva felt like she'd stumbled into a black market clinic, but Julian seemed to know exactly what he was doing as he led her to the exam room. Dr Soren ushered them into a small, windowless space that smelled of disinfectant and stale air.

"Please, have a seat," she said, gesturing to a worn couch.

Eva hesitated before sitting down, Julian taking a seat beside her. Dr Soren began prepping the ultrasound machine, her movements swift and efficient.

"So, Eva, tell me – when did you first suspect something was amiss?" Dr Soren asked, her eyes locked onto Eva's.

Eva shrugged, feeling a flush rise to her cheeks. "I don't know...a few weeks ago? I just started noticing some...changes."

Dr Soren nodded sympathetically. "And Julian here says you've been experiencing some unusual symptoms?"

Julian nodded, his voice steady. "Morning sickness, fatigue...Eva's been feeling off for a while now."

Dr Soren scribbled down some notes before turning to Eva with a piercing gaze. "I'm going to need a blood sample and a urine sample from you," she said firmly.

As Dr Soren administered the tests, Julian leaned over to whisper something in her ear. Eva caught snippets of their hushed conversation – Julian was telling the doctor about who she really was. Dr Soren had a look of utter disbelief on her face, and looked at Eva and nodded at Julian . Dr Soren ran numerous tests and when Dr Soren finally showed them ultrasound scan , Eva felt like she'd been punched in the gut. The screen flickered to life, displaying a tiny heartbeat surrounded by unmistakable signs of fetal development.

Dr Soren's face was a mask of surprise as she turned to Julian. "This is...impossible," she muttered. "Bio-humans aren't supposed to get pregnant."

Julian nodded gravely, his eyes locked onto Eva's. "We know," he said quietly.

Dr Soren leaned back in her chair, her brow furrowed with concern. "Eva, I need you to understand – this is a...unique situation. We'll need to run some tests to determine the cause of this miracle."

Eva nodded numbly as Dr Soren continued to explain their options. Julian's hand found hers, offering a reassuring squeeze.

"What does it mean?" Eva asked finally, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dr Soren leaned forward, her eyes locked onto Eva's. "It means that...well, I'm not entirely sure," she admitted. "But what I do know is that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to learn more about bio-human physiology. This is the first case of a pregnancy between human and a bio human ...EVER!!!!!"

As the doctor continued to explain their options, Eva felt like she was drowning in a sea of uncertainty. What did this mean for her kind? Was this some kind of anomaly or mutation?

When Dr Soren finally finished speaking, Julian stood up, his eyes locked onto Eva's. "We'll figure it out," he whispered into her ear. Julian took out his OmniCard and paid Dr Soren and thanked her for her services and that they would be in touch.

Eva nodded, trying to process the enormity of what had just happened. She was pregnant – and in a world where bio-humans were not meant to get pregnant, their future hung precariously in the balance.

"What now?" she asked Julian, her voice barely above a whisper. Julian's eyes locked onto hers, a mixture of fear and determination etched on his face.

"We'll find a way," he promised. "Together."
