She's visiting family

You respond, "Oh, she's just visiting family. It's been a while. Definitely puts a cramp in my style, right? But she'll be back."

Dave cocks his head a little and asks. "You're damned right it does. She's the best part of you, hands down." Asshole. You two aren't exactly good buddies; that isn't just a friendly jab. "So, when do I get to see that little piece of ass strut around here again and, hopefully, into the kitchen? Or my bedroom, if you're ever inclined to share."

YOUR bedroom? Not likely! You perv bastard.

"I don't know. It's not like they're across the country but it's still a good day's drive. She can take her classes remotely, so she's good to stay there for a while if she wants. Gas isn't free." You decide to remind him who's the man of THIS apartment, at least. "God knows I'm looking forward to her return to MY bedroom. I hope you have some good earplugs."

Dave turns his head to the side and looks at you askance. He's smirking a little. "Funny... I've seen her once or twice last week." He hesitates for a moment, looking at your face carefully. "Around town, of course."

The blood drains from your face and your chest tightens. You're looking at Dave but your mind sees Carrie's smirk in Troy's entryway.

"You brought me here to humiliate and hurt me?" Carrie had nodded immediately.

Dave notices your expression and bursts out laughing. "Yeah, buddy, and she wasn't alone. I don't think YOU have to worry about cleaning your room for company any time soon."

He continues, "Good story, though. You make that up off the cuff? No hesitation, well thought out, consistent. I'm impressed! Or is that what she told you before she left you?"

You hang your head. Your face turns hot and you can feel the blood pounding through your ears.

Dave is still laughing. "Ah-ha-ha! Okay, so you knew! Woooow! This must suck SO MUCH for you. I mean, you had it all and now..."

He starts walking toward his room. "Still. I mean it, John, that was a REALLY good lie right there. You should be proud of yourself. I certainly am. I mean that."

He reaches his door and grabs the handle behind him. "Pity that she, you know, cut your balls off and traded them in to test drive a few new models. Do you believe in reincarnation? Maybe they'll grow back in your next life." He closes his door. You can still hear him chuckling in his room.

You stand there. Your stomach is churning.

What did you expect? He's rich. She's gorgeous and outgoing. They're young. Of course they'll be out in the town.

So now Dave knows. You don't think your apartment is going to be a very happy place for you any time in the near future.

Test drive new models? Plural? Was he just taking liberties with the language or was he describing what he actually saw?

You sure as hell aren't going to ask him to clarify.
