Their household spent the next few years in Pakistan. It was a hard life, and thus Carrie tried to make it a simple one. She had three children over a five year span, and focused her attentions on raising them. Mohammad worked to gather allies. It was slow sledding.

In year five, tragedy occurred. Ali was shot and killed while attempting to meet with an anti-Taliban group on the border. Lindsay was inconsolable and she was ready to return to the United States with her children. Mohammad entered the room he shared with Carrie.

"How are you, my love?" Carrie said, leaning in to kiss her conqueror.

"I am ... okay. Better than Lindsay. We need to have a talk about her, Carrie." Carrie listened.

"You are aware of Sharia law, of course. And that it permits a man four wives." Carrie nodded slowly.

"I would like to take additional wives, Carrie. I'd like Lindsay to be one of them. Having you and Lindsay in our camp is very motivating to the men. It is a taste of what can be." Carrie sighed. She wasn't surprised. She was disappointed. But at least it was coming from a good place.

"I accepted you as the leader of our household, Mohammad. And I trust your decisions."

Mohammad took four wives -- the 30 year-old Lindsay, the 30 year-old Carrie, the 28 year-old Ayesha, and a local 18 year-old, Noor. From now on, Carrie would need to share.
