Shadows on the Northern Road
The northern road out of Kalm stretched empty under a clear night sky. The four of them walked in a loose line, boots quiet on the packed dirt. Midgar’s glow was long gone behind them. Ahead the land rose toward the foothills and the first stretches of wilderness that still carried Shinra’s scars.
They made camp a few hours before dawn in a shallow depression shielded by low rocks and scrub. No fire. Cold rations only. Barret took the first watch, gun-arm resting across his knees as he scanned the dark. Cloud sat with his back against a boulder, Buster Sword within reach. Tifa and Aerith shared a thin blanket a short distance away.
Sleep came slowly. The open air felt too large after the press of the undercity. When Barret finally woke Cloud for the second watch, the sky had begun to pale at the edges. Cloud took his place on the rise. Tifa rose a few minutes later and joined him without speaking. She sat close enough that their shoulders touched. The quiet between them carried the weight of everything left unsaid since Nibelheim.
After a while she shifted, turned toward him, and kissed him once, slow and deliberate. Her hand slid down his stomach, opened his pants, and wrapped around his cock. She stroked him until he was fully hard, then climbed into his lap, facing him, and sank down onto his length in one careful motion. She was already wet. Cloud gripped her hips and let her move. She rode him in near silence, small rolls of her hips, the wet heat of her cunt taking him deep each time. Their breathing stayed low. When she came it was with a tight full-body shiver, walls fluttering around him. Cloud followed a few thrusts later, flooding her while her face stayed buried against his neck.
They stayed joined until the first real light touched the hills. Tifa lifted off him carefully, fixed her clothes, and returned to the blanket without a word. Cloud adjusted his pants and kept watch until the others stirred.
They broke camp as the sun cleared the horizon. The road continued north, empty of traffic. By mid-morning the terrain shifted toward rougher ground and the first signs of the old mining routes. Barret spotted tracks in the dust that did not belong to ordinary travelers. Boot prints. Fresh. Leading toward the higher passes.
“Turks,” he said. “Or someone who walks like them.”
Cloud studied the prints and nodded. The trail of black cloaks and mako residue still pulled them forward, but now there were living hunters on the same path. The group tightened formation and kept moving. The mountains ahead promised harder ground and less cover. Sephiroth’s shadow stretched further north. The Turks were already closing the distance from behind.
